About The Position

Under general supervision, this position collects refuse on a designated route within the municipality. Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Collects solid waste materials on an assigned City route, including trash bags, televisions, building materials, furniture and related items. Assists in operations of the sanitations vehicles. Conducts post-trip activities on the sanitation truck, including greasing fittings and washing the truck. Maintains activity reports. Participates in special event cleanup assignments. Assists other agencies with trash removal within the City as needed. Provides assistance to other drivers as necessary. Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned. Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License.
• Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of recordkeeping practices.
• Knowledge of safety procedures and practices.
• Skill in handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
• Skill in providing efficient customer service.
• Skill in understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
• Skill in using various hand tools.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
• Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
