2027 Graduate - Software Systems Engineer

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Laurel, MD

About The Position

APL is seeking a graduate software engineer to help build software systems addressing complex Navy problems. The role joins a multidisciplinary team that rapidly develops and deploys prototype solutions involving areas such as sensor integration, data fusion, distributed communications, and decentralized processing. Engineers contribute across project activities, including concept development, algorithm design, software implementation, and testing, and may need to learn and use different languages and technologies as tasks require. The position applies modern and proven technologies and software practices to develop innovative, dependable solutions. Work spans multiple projects across the product life cycle and may include real-time tactical systems, system refactoring, and adding new capabilities. The engineer collaborates with users and fellow engineers to understand needs, design and implement software, test solutions, and communicate designs and results in reports, peer reviews, and presentations. Solutions should be testable, extensible, and maintainable.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Thrive in a highly collaborative setting and deliver timely results.
  • Exposure to at least one object-oriented programming language; C++ is preferred.
  • Familiarity with common DevOps toolchains, such as GitLab.
  • Experience with one or more scripting languages, such as Python or Perl.
  • Strong interest in designing and evaluating software architecture.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel to sponsor sites for test events and data collection.
  • Ability and willingness to continually learn new programming languages, software frameworks, and practices.
  • Ability to obtain Interim Secret clearance by the start date and ultimately obtain Secret clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for eligibility.
