Software Safety Manager

Stellantis•Auburn Hills, MI

About The Position

Stellantis is developing a software platform for deployment across its vehicles. The Software Architecture and Safety team is seeking an experienced Software Safety Manager to provide leadership and technical authority for software functional safety across the development lifecycle. The role ensures ISO 26262 compliance and consistent safety practices across software platforms and products, while defining safety strategy, requirements, architecture, verification, and evidence for safety approval. The manager coordinates with engineering teams, management, suppliers, and assessors, and supports safety assessments and release decisions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related discipline.
  • At least 8 years of overall related experience.
  • Significant experience in automotive embedded software functional safety, including development of ASIL B to ASIL D systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of ISO 26262.
  • Strong expertise in safety planning, safety lifecycle tailoring, safety cases, confirmation measures, and ASIL decomposition.
  • Proven experience defining software safety requirements, safety mechanisms, fault management, diagnostics, and degraded-mode strategies.
  • Strong knowledge of AUTOSAR Classic and/or Adaptive, including RTE, BSW, operating systems, communication, and diagnostic services.
  • Practical expertise in software safety analyses, including FMEA, FTA, dependent failure, and failure-propagation analyses.
  • Strong knowledge of safety-oriented software verification, including static analysis, fault injection, testing, and structural coverage.
  • Experience with embedded C/C++, model-based development or generated code, including MISRA C/C++ coding practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership, challenge safety arguments, influence architecture decisions, and communicate effectively internationally.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with tool and software qualification, proven-in-use arguments, and configuration, change, and anomaly management processes.
  • Proficiency with engineering lifecycle and traceability tools such as DOORS, Polarion, Jama, Git, and Jira.
  • Experience collaborating with automotive OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers, independent assessors, and globally distributed development organizations.
  • Recognized expertise and technical leadership in software functional safety, including experience mentoring engineers and driving engineering excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and govern software functional safety across the development lifecycle, ensuring ISO 26262 compliance, appropriate tailoring, ASIL-dependent rigor, and consistent safety principles across software platforms and products.
  • Define software safety strategy and technical direction, including safety plans, responsibilities, milestones, work products, verification and confirmation measures, acceptance criteria, and evidence required for safety approval.
  • Drive the definition and integrity of software safety requirements and architecture, including decomposition, allocation, traceability, safety mechanisms, fault reactions, degraded modes, partitioning, freedom from interference, and interface assumptions.
  • Provide technical authority for software safety analyses and engineering decisions, including FMEA, FTA, dependent failure analysis, ASIL decomposition, diagnostic coverage, reuse justification, third-party software assessment, and tool qualification strategies.
  • Define and oversee ASIL-appropriate verification and validation strategies, including reviews, static analysis, coding compliance, unit and integration testing, robustness, fault injection, structural coverage, and independence requirements.
  • Ensure safety compliance, traceability, and readiness of software work products, including requirements, architecture, implementation evidence, verification results, anomalies, deviations, assumptions, residual risks, safety manuals, and software contributions to the safety case.
  • Serve as senior software safety authority across engineering and management, coordinating system, hardware, software, cybersecurity, quality, suppliers, and assessors; support audits and assessments; and provide evidence-based recommendations for release decisions.
