Software Safety Engineer

Modern Technology Solutions Inc•Huntsville, AL

About The Position

MTSI is seeking a highly skilled Software System Safety Engineer to contribute to the development, assessment, and rapid fielding of Army Uncrewed LE platforms. The role serves as a technical authority responsible for establishing, standardizing, and guiding the software safety framework across multiple Launched Effects Assistant Product Manager (APM) teams. The engineer bridges traditional system safety principles with the operational needs of rapid, iterative defense acquisition and collaborates with APM teams, external stakeholders, airworthiness authorities, and safety review boards to tailor processes for Launched Effects. The position calls for a collaborative, adaptable systems thinker who can work in a fast-paced, evolving environment and adjust strategies to changing warfighter priorities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, such as Software, Systems, Computer, Electrical, Aerospace, or a related technical field.
  • U.S. citizenship and an active Secret clearance, or the ability to obtain one.
  • At least 5 years of experience in system safety engineering, software hazard analysis, or systems engineering on software-intensive systems.
  • Demonstrated experience formulating, tailoring, and standardizing technical processes in complex project environments or defense acquisition programs.
  • Strong negotiation, consensus-building, and communication skills, including the ability to advocate technical positions to external regulatory bodies and senior decision-makers.
  • Ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and support diverse product offices in executing technical standards.
  • Proactive, self-starter mindset and ability to thrive and pivot in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving program environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with DoD and Army safety, airworthiness, and materiel release policies and standards, such as MIL-STD-882E, AR 70-62, and AMCOM Reg 385-17.
  • Experience with Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (Group 1–3 UAS), loitering munitions, or missile platforms.
  • Experience with rapid acquisition frameworks, such as Other Transaction Authority (OTA), Middle Tier of Acquisition (MTA), or rapid prototyping and fielding initiatives.
  • Understanding of modern software architectures, safety-critical software partitions, and Modular Open Systems Approaches (MOSA).

Responsibilities

  • Formulate, standardize, and maintain a tailored software safety framework and guidance for LE APM teams to apply across product lines and vendor architectures.
  • Partner with LE APM product teams, project engineers, and contractors to provide technical guidance, risk assessments, and reviews for software safety activities.
  • Work with external safety organizations, review boards, and airworthiness authorities to establish tailored software safety requirements aligned with Launched Effects operational profiles.
  • Communicate the technical, cost, and operational differences between LE platforms and conventional aviation platforms within Army aviation and safety communities.
  • Prepare technical positions, executive white papers, and risk-trade briefings to build consensus and support process modernization across Army leadership.
  • Guide development of safety documentation, risk mitigations, and hazard analyses for safety releases, Airworthiness Releases (AWR), Materiel Releases, and Soldier testing and operational fielding events.
  • Evaluate vendor software system safety analyses, safety architectures, and hazard logs to identify core system hazards and ensure safety integrity without unnecessary programmatic burden.
  • Adjust software safety priorities, approaches, and risk mitigation strategies in response to changing program timelines, threat demands, and fielding cycles.
