About The Position

IronMountain Solutions is seeking a Software System Safety Engineer to support the U.S. Army Launched Effects Product Office in developing, assessing, and rapidly fielding Army Uncrewed Launched Effects platforms. The position will help establish, standardize, and guide software safety practices across multiple platform variants and Assistant Product Manager (APM) teams throughout the acquisition lifecycle. The engineer will serve as a technical authority within the engineering team, bridging system safety principles with the operational demands of rapid, iterative defense acquisition. The role involves collaborating with APM teams, project engineers, contractors, external safety organizations, airworthiness authorities, and review boards to tailor processes and requirements to Launched Effects systems. The successful candidate will be collaborative and adaptable, able to adjust technical approaches as program strategies and warfighter priorities evolve. The position is based in Huntsville, Alabama, is full-time at 40 hours per week, and does not authorize remote work. Relocation is negotiable.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, such as Software, Systems, Computer Engineering, Electrical, Aerospace, or a related technical field.
  • Demonstrated experience in system safety engineering, software hazard analysis, or systems engineering on software-intensive systems.
  • Proven experience formulating, tailoring, and standardizing technical processes in complex project environments or defense acquisition programs.
  • Strong negotiation, consensus-building, and communication skills, including the ability to advocate technical positions to external regulatory bodies and senior decision-makers.
  • Ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and support diverse product offices in executing technical standards.
  • Proactive, self-starting approach and ability to thrive and pivot quickly in a fast-paced, evolving program environment.
  • Active Secret security clearance or ability to obtain and maintain an active Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with DoD and Army safety, airworthiness, and materiel release policies and standards, such as MIL-STD-882E, AR 70-62, and AMCOM Reg 385-17.
  • Experience with Group 1–3 Uncrewed Aircraft Systems, loitering munitions, or missile platforms.
  • Experience with rapid acquisition frameworks, such as Other Transaction Authority (OTA), Middle Tier of Acquisition (MTA), or rapid prototyping and fielding initiatives.
  • Understanding of modern software architectures, safety-critical software partitions, and Modular Open Systems Approaches (MOSA).

Responsibilities

  • Formulate, standardize, and maintain a tailored software safety framework and guidance for LE APM teams across product lines and vendor architectures.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance, risk assessments, and reviews to LE APM teams, project engineers, and contractors during software safety planning and execution.
  • Interface with external safety organizations, review boards, and airworthiness authorities to establish software safety requirements aligned with Launched Effects operational profiles.
  • Represent Launched Effects within Army aviation and safety communities, communicating how LE platforms differ from conventional aviation platforms in technical, cost, and operational terms.
  • Prepare technical positions, executive white papers, and risk-trade briefings to build consensus and support process modernization across Army leadership.
  • Guide and support safety documentation, risk mitigations, and hazard analyses for safety releases, Airworthiness Releases (AWR), Materiel Releases, and Soldier test and operational fielding events.
  • Evaluate vendor software system safety analyses, safety architectures, and hazard logs to identify core system hazards and maintain safety integrity without unnecessary programmatic burden.
  • Adjust software safety priorities, approaches, and risk mitigation strategies in response to changing timelines, threat demands, and iterative fielding cycles.
