Software Integration and Test Lead

BLUE ORIGIN•Seattle, WA
•$230,773 - $323,082

About The Position

Blue Origin is seeking a Blue Ring SIL Software I&T Lead in its In-Space Systems business unit and Blue National Security organization. The role architects, develops, verifies, and integrates software products using high-fidelity simulation environments to test the Blue Ring spacecraft system and support its reliability and robustness. The lead works with subject matter experts to refine a scalable, flexible simulation environment and leads integration and test efforts using the software-in-the-loop (SIL) environment. The position calls for deep experience with spacecraft command and data handling (C&DH), telecommand and telemetry processing, hardware I/O interfaces, and spacecraft-system physics. The role supports testing across software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, and real-time environments, develops simulation models for nominal and off-nominal scenarios, and works across hardware, systems, autonomy, and test teams. It also provides background support for on-orbit operations, leads troubleshooting of deployed spacecraft simulation issues, and mentors junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 10 or more years of experience in spacecraft software, simulation software, or embedded software development.
  • Proven experience architecting and developing complex simulation environments for flight or safety-critical embedded systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the technical architecture of a complex software system.
  • Deep understanding of deterministic lockstep simulation design and coupling algorithms with representative models, including synchronization and repeatability.
  • Strong knowledge of modeling GN&C sensors and actuators, such as IMUs, star trackers, magnetometers, reaction wheel assemblies, and magnetic torque rods.
  • Strong programming skills in C++ and Python.
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented problem-solving and software layering to support modularity and reuse.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as UDP/TCP, I2C, and UART.
  • Experience with the modern software lifecycle, configuration management (Git), CI/CD, and containerized environments.
  • Proficiency with Docker, Kubernetes, and containerization.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Active Top Secret/SCI clearance desired.
  • Familiarity with CCSDS standards for spacecraft telecommand and telemetry processing.
  • Experience with real-time operating systems such as Linux, QNX, VxWorks, or RTEMS.
  • Experience with onboard time management, precision timing interfaces, or GPS-disciplined time synchronization.
  • Familiarity with spacecraft FDIR (Fault Detection, Isolation, and Response) concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture, design, implementation, and testing of a comprehensive simulation environment for testing and verifying Blue Ring software.
  • Collaborate with test team leads to develop a simulation environment deployable on multiple platforms for software-in-the-loop (SIL), hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), and real-time environment tests.
  • Work with hardware, systems, and autonomy engineers to define simulation requirements, bug fixes, interfaces, and behavioral boundaries.
  • Develop and integrate high-fidelity simulation models to test flight software across nominal and off-nominal operational scenarios.
  • Guide software integration, verification, and validation testing activities.
  • Provide background support for on-orbit operations and lead troubleshooting of deployed spacecraft simulation issues.
  • Mentor junior engineers and drive the technical growth and expertise of the team.
