Rust Software Engineering Intern (Chip Design Tools) - Winter

Fab2Austin, TX
$108,000 - $126,000Onsite

About The Position

fab2 is an early-stage hardware startup building the software that silicon chip designers should have had 20 years ago. The current chip design process involves stitching together old desktop software, and fab2 aims to create a modern, integrated platform called Studio. Studio is a fast, browser-based, multiplayer platform for designing and assembling whole chips, aiming to provide a Figma-like experience for silicon design. The goal is to allow users to go from idea to finished design without installing anything or leaving the application, encompassing schematic capture, physical layout, and simulation. This role is a full-stack Rust position, working on the application itself, with opportunities to own major features and touch the entire stack. The internship is for Winter.

Requirements

  • Strong Rust, or serious C++/systems experience and the obvious curiosity to go deep in Rust.
  • Solid systems fundamentals: memory, performance, concurrency.
  • Experience profiling before optimizing.
  • Proven ability to take something slow and make it fast.
  • A track record of non-trivial software built from scratch that can be walked through end to end.
  • A portfolio (GitHub is fine) is required.
  • Willingness to learn about chip design.

Nice To Haves

  • A game, engine, or real-time background: ECS, scene graphs, spatial indexing, physics engines, frame budgets, GUI, low-latency input.
  • Some EE, analog and digital background.
  • Experience with deep, serious software like Blender, Ableton, KiCad, CAD tools, DAWs, game engines.
  • Experience with distributed or real-time systems: write-ahead logs, event sourcing, replication, CRDTs, OT, websockets. Data pipelines.
  • Experience with geometry, graph, and routing algorithms; spatial data structures; optimization.
  • Familiarity with schema evolution and serialization formats like Protobuf, Flatbuffers, Cap’n Proto.
  • Experience with graphics and visualization: turning big, complex datasets into something legible, fast, and even beautiful on screen. Custom rendering, shaders, GPU pipelines (WebGPU, Vulkan, OpenGL).
  • An interest in version control, not just using Git but how it works underneath.

Responsibilities

  • Work on the application itself, touching the whole stack.
  • Own major features from design through shipping.
  • Develop deeply interactive, low-latency editing tools.
  • Implement a document model that supports diffing, merging, and real-time collaboration.
  • Build the sync engine for streaming edits between clients.
  • Develop a GPU canvas that renders millions of polygons smoothly.
  • Implement simulation features with streaming waveforms and interactive tiers.
  • Contribute to a plugin system built on sandboxed WebAssembly components.
  • Develop a scripting API.
  • Create integrations that send finished designs to the fab.
