About The Position

Join Leidos as a Mid-Level Embedded Software Engineer supporting mission-critical defense projects in Huntsville, AL. You’ll play a key role in designing, developing, and integrating advanced embedded software for missile defense systems, working alongside industry experts in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. This is an onsite position with the potential for conversion to full-time employment, offering you the opportunity to influence high-impact projects and mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline (GPA 3.0+), or Master’s with relevant experience.
  • 4+ years of software engineering experience (or 2+ years with Master’s).
  • 2+ years of real-time embedded systems development, preferably in defense, aerospace, or safety-critical environments.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems.
  • Experience with RTOS (VxWorks, Integrity, FreeRTOS) and embedded processors (ARM Cortex, RISC-V).
  • Familiarity with embedded debugging tools (JTAG, oscilloscopes).
  • Strong skills in Agile development, DevOps, CI/CD, and test automation.
  • Analytical mindset with proven problem-solving skills.
  • US Citizenship and ability to obtain DoD Secret Security Clearance.
  • Residency in North Alabama area or willingness to relocate.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with high-speed weapons systems, flight controls, or large-scale embedded solutions.
  • Knowledge of containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
  • Background in developing deterministic, high-performance embedded systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and unit-test embedded software for airborne systems and missile defense platforms.
  • Integrate software modules within subsystems and contribute to cross-system integration efforts.
  • Develop and maintain software tools, harnesses, and automated test solutions.
  • Analyze software requirements and hardware compatibility with a focus on high-performance, real-time systems.
  • Utilize Agile, DevOps, and CI/CD practices to ensure high-quality software delivery.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve complex technical challenges.
  • Recommend new technologies, tools, and standards to enhance engineering practices.
  • Mentor and review work of junior engineers, driving team knowledge and performance.
  • Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
