Software Engineer, Core Product

Tin Can•Seattle, WA
•$145,000 - $175,000•Onsite

About The Position

Tin Can is hiring two Software Engineers to own core product features for its screen-free phone and family services. The role spans the Flutter app used by parents, TypeScript services on AWS Lambda for contacts, plans, call logs, and voicemail, and the call-routing service that governs every call. The engineer will collaborate with the Head of Product, the core experience product manager and designer, and engineers responsible for the voice platform, firmware, and account portal. Work affecting SIP and media will be reviewed by voice engineers. The role focuses on helping children place and return calls, making contact setup and approvals easier, adding speed dials and independent child-friendly setup options, and building distinctive features such as hotlines. It also includes building hotline tools, coordinating the service side of firmware-dependent features, instrumenting releases, and participating in the on-call rotation. This is an onsite role for someone based in Seattle, working from the office Monday through Thursday.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years building user-facing software, including taking a feature from idea to production and maintaining it.
  • Strong TypeScript skills and experience building and operating a production API; able to model contacts, permissions, and call history.
  • Experience shipping a mobile or web client used regularly by people.
  • Fluency using AI to support prototyping, building, and analysis.
  • Hands-on, resourceful approach, including willingness to prototype on a real Tin Can device.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, collaborative and low-ego working style.
  • Based in Seattle and able to work from the office Monday through Thursday.

Nice To Haves

  • Flutter or Dart experience.
  • Curiosity about telephony, including dial plans, IVRs, and text-to-speech.
  • Experience building products for children or families.
  • Experience with Stripe, Shopify, or IoT integrations.

Responsibilities

  • Improve how callers are identified and called back across the phone, services, and parents’ app.
  • Build more speed dials and features that children can set up independently with parent approval.
  • Improve contact syncing, contact approvals, and the first-run experience so families can make a call on day one.
  • Create distinctive, fun features for the phone.
  • Own call-routing rules, including what speed dials and hotline numbers do and whom a child can reach.
  • Build hotline tooling for scheduling, uploading, and playback in collaboration with voice-platform engineers.
  • Specify and build service-side features that integrate with firmware, including phone playback and ringing behavior.
  • Instrument shipped features with event schemas, dashboards, and alarms to measure product usage.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to build technology intended to support children’s real-world connections and reduce screen time.
  • Ownership of core product features and the opportunity to see their impact on family calling behavior.
  • Small, mission-driven, high-trust team.
  • Room to challenge assumptions and explore solutions.
