Software Engineer

Composite Energy Technologies•Bristol, RI

About The Position

The Software Engineer develops and integrates software for unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) platforms. The role works across the robotics stack, from device and sensor integration through autonomy behaviors, testing, and deployment, in collaboration with software, electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers. The engineer rapidly prototypes proof-of-concepts and maintains production-quality software for Hadalus vehicle product lines. The position includes developing C++ software and ROS 2 components, improving autonomy capabilities, integrating sensors and hardware interfaces, and creating tools and test environments. It also involves diagnosing issues across Linux-based systems and embedded platforms, preparing test strategies and documentation, and supporting vehicle testing and mission demonstrations. Occasional travel to demonstrations is expected.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 2–5+ years of professional software systems experience.
  • Passion for autonomy, software, and robotics.
  • Proficiency with or understanding of software tools needed for development and debugging.
  • Experience working with underwater robotics or electronics.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with core third-party software stacks, including ROS 2, MOOS, OpenAUV, PCX, and MOAA.
  • Experience with DDS middleware, modern C++, HTML-5, or Java.
  • Software testing and production release experience.
  • Machine learning experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain production-quality C++ software for UUV platforms and support equipment.
  • Develop and integrate ROS 2 nodes, packages, and system interfaces for UUV platforms.
  • Build and improve autonomy capabilities, including navigation, path planning, and vehicle monitoring.
  • Integrate sensors and hardware interfaces, potentially including motor controllers, actuators, Forward Looking Sonars, and Side-Scan Sonars.
  • Develop tools and test environments for simulation, automated testing, and field-data analysis.
  • Diagnose software and integration issues across Linux-based systems and embedded platforms.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to define requirements, review designs, and deliver tested capabilities.
  • Participate in hardware- and software-in-the-loop testing and occasional field testing or customer demonstrations.
  • Support the development, operation, and maintenance of marine vehicles for testing and mission demonstrations, as applicable.
  • Develop test strategies, devices, and systems, and prepare test procedures and reports to document designs, procedures, and results.
  • Use computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment as needed.
  • Travel to events as needed.
