About The Position

Chainguard is hiring a Software Engineer for its Package and Image Automation team within Sustaining Automation, which owns the automation underpinning the company’s image factory. The team builds and maintains systems that keep packages and images current, tested, and building cleanly with minimal manual intervention as the number of supported ecosystems and images grows. The engineer will contribute hands-on to a small, focused squad, developing systems and AI-powered tooling to improve automation reliability and speed. The role includes opportunities to influence the squad’s roadmap and sits at the intersection of developer tooling, AI and agents, and software supply chain security. The role is remote-first, with collaboration across a distributed team primarily in the US and Canada and colleagues in Europe and India.

  • Strong Go skills.
  • Experience using AI/LLMs to generate, review, and test code.
  • Systems design skills, including the ability to contribute to loosely coupled, scalable systems and make pragmatic trade-offs.
  • Experience building developer tools, CLIs, or automation platforms.
  • Knowledge of the container ecosystem, including Docker, OCI, container registries, and Kubernetes.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to write clear technical documents, work autonomously, and collaborate across teams and time zones.
  • Based in the United States or Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with melange, apko, or Wolfi.
  • Understanding of compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, FIPS, or STIG.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of systems that orchestrate package creation, test generation, and image building.
  • Develop LLM-integrated, agentic pipelines for manifest generation, test scaffolding, and validation; help design prompt architectures, evaluation loops, and quality gates.
  • Develop production Go, including CLI tools, services, and integrations.
  • Develop test generators, validation frameworks, quality gates, and other tooling and automation to improve customer reliability.
  • Contribute ideas and technical input to planning and help shape the team’s roadmap.
  • Collaborate with teammates across time zones, including colleagues in the US, Canada, Europe, and India.

Benefits

  • Remote-first culture with team meetup opportunities and bi-annual destination summits.
