About The Position

Build backend services and cloud architecture connecting Cortex controllers to Synapse, a development environment for industrial machines. The work spans APIs, device connectivity, telemetry pipelines, data storage, and application features used by engineers to deploy, monitor, and debug systems. The role requires strong backend and distributed-systems judgment, hands-on software delivery, and decisions about service communication, data flow, and system behavior as usage grows. It also includes building frontend features for a complete product experience. Working directly with the founders and embedded team, the engineer owns software from design through deployment, operation, and improvement. The role is based in Gardena, California, and is on-site five days a week.

Requirements

• Demonstrated engineering depth through at least one of: personal architecture ownership of a production system scaled from an early product to thousands or millions of users or devices; software engineering experience at a FAANG company; or an engineering background from a leading engineering university.
• Experience designing, implementing, and operating production backend services, with the ability to explain personal contributions and technical decisions.
• Strong fundamentals in networking, API design, databases, concurrency, and distributed systems.
• Ability to explain a production bottleneck or failure resolved, the evidence used, and the resulting improvement.
• Depth in a backend language such as Go, Rust, Python, or C++, and ability to deliver application features in TypeScript/React.
• Use of automated testing, instrumentation, and operational feedback to improve owned systems.
• Ability to turn incomplete requirements into useful software and communicate tradeoffs across reliability, performance, cost, and delivery speed.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with connected device fleets, industrial telemetry, or cloud services supporting physical systems.
• Experience with developer tools, IDEs, simulation, or production AI features.
• Ownership across backend architecture and frontend workflows in an early product.

Responsibilities

• Architect backend services and cloud systems for controller connectivity, application state, and industrial data, with paths to supporting thousands or millions of users and devices.
• Develop reliable APIs, data models, and service boundaries that support growth without unnecessary early complexity.
• Build telemetry ingestion, storage, and querying, making explicit decisions about throughput, latency, consistency, and failure handling.
• Own production reliability and observability; investigate incidents and remove bottlenecks using measured evidence.
• Deliver TypeScript/React features in Synapse for deployment, monitoring, debugging, and working with machine data.
• Ship tested software through CI/CD with clear rollout, rollback, and recovery paths.
• Work with customers and embedded engineers to translate machine workflows into useful application and cloud capabilities.
• Own software from design through deployment, operation, and improvement.
