Software Engineer, Core OS Capabilities

Meta•Redmond, WA
•$154,003 - $217,000

About The Position

Reality Labs at Meta builds products designed to help people connect with one another and interact with their environment in natural and innovative ways. The team develops products at the intersection of hardware, software, and content, using advanced technologies to deliver high performance, security, and privacy while working within power and thermal constraints. As a Software Engineer on the Reality Labs team, you will develop and ship system software and core operating system capabilities for innovative hardware. The work spans high-level operating systems (HLOS) and real-time operating systems (RTOS), and includes security and privacy frameworks, memory encryption, biometrics, and SoC AI accelerator services and hardware abstraction layers (HAL), including ExecuTorch integration. You will work across engineering disciplines and hardware and software teams to bring up devices, debug system-level issues, and support factory software development and manufacturing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 5 years of software development experience in industry settings, or a PhD with at least 2 years of experience.
  • Experience designing and programming in C or C++ for development, debugging, testing, and performance analysis.
  • Experience debugging and troubleshooting complex issues involving multiple components in hardware, BSP/OS, and firmware.
  • Experience developing system software on HLOS or RTOS platforms.
  • Experience working collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with core OS capabilities such as security fundamentals, privacy protection, encryption techniques, or biometrics.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing with SoC BSP/Android system-level software or modern real-time operating systems.
  • Experience with software diagnostics and analysis tools for system-level debugging.
  • Experience developing, debugging, and shipping software products on large code bases spanning platforms and tools.
  • Experience leading complex features or projects across multiple teams.
  • Prior full-lifecycle base-platform software or firmware development experience bringing a high-volume product from design to mass production.
  • Prior experience supporting large-volume device manufacturing.
  • Experience designing and developing SoC AI accelerator software, hardware abstraction layers (HAL), or machine learning runtime frameworks such as ExecuTorch.
  • Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices, such as risk assessment, bias mitigation, and quality and accuracy reviews.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize or redesign workflows and drive measurable impact, such as efficiency gains or quality improvements.
  • Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development, such as prompt/context engineering or agent orchestration, and staying current with emerging AI technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the team's engineering activities throughout the product development lifecycle and provide technical guidance to team members.
  • Plan, analyze, design, develop, and debug system software across high-level operating systems (HLOS) and RTOS environments.
  • Design, implement, and maintain core OS capabilities, focusing on security basics, privacy frameworks, memory encryption, biometrics, and SoC AI accelerator services/HAL, including ExecuTorch integration.
  • Debug complex system-level, multi-component issues spanning multiple system layers and systems, such as Android and RTOS.
  • Bring up new devices and lead debugging across multiple hardware and software teams.
  • Collaborate across engineering disciplines and make architectural tradeoffs to rapidly deliver base-level device software.
  • Support factory software development, device calibration, factory line bring-up, and failure analysis.
