As a Senior Software Engineer, you will lead the design, development, and delivery of scalable software solutions aligned with business objectives. About the team: The Core Foundation Platform – Web team owns the engineering foundations that power Walmart.com and our international eCommerce platforms. We are responsible for: Core architecture and shared frameworks for a large multi-tenant, international monorepo application Platform standards, engineering guidelines, and architecture decision records (ADRs) Global reusable React components aligned to Living Design standards Performance engineering, site stability, and production resilience Developer tooling, lint rules, CI/CD integrations, and governance guardrails Technical enablement and onboarding for 150+ feature teams across the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Sam’s Club, Chile, South Africa, and beyond Our mission is to provide a scalable, stable, and high-performing web platform that empowers thousands of engineers to build safely and efficiently—without compromising customer experience, accessibility, or site reliability.

Requirements

  • At least 4+ years of software engineering experience, with deep expertise in front-end architecture at scale.
  • Proven experience building and supporting high-traffic eCommerce or large-scale consumer platforms.
  • Expert knowledge of React, TypeScript, Node.js, and Next.js.
  • Strong understanding of monorepo strategies and multi-tenant application architecture.
  • Experience with performance optimization (Core Web Vitals, caching strategies, logging, monitoring).
  • Advanced understanding of system design, scalability patterns, and distributed systems fundamentals.
  • Experience leading cross-team architecture initiatives influencing large engineering organizations.
  • Strong DevOps knowledge including CI/CD, containerization, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience writing and enforcing engineering standards and governance policies.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence at scale.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • OR 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting internationalized, multi-market web platforms preferred
  • Experience implementing accessibility (ADA/WCAG) standards preferred
  • Background in platform engineering or developer productivity tooling preferred.
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers and driving org-level technical change preferred
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related area and 1 year's experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Candidates with a background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership & Architecture: Define and evolve front-end architecture for a large-scale Next.js, React, and Node.js ecosystem. Lead architectural decision-making and author ADRs that influence hundreds of engineers. Drive modernization initiatives including framework upgrades, dependency governance, and monorepo strategy. Ensure multi-tenant architecture supports international expansion and onboarding of new markets.
  • Platform Engineering & Developer Experience: Design and maintain shared frameworks, libraries, and reusable components used across 150+ teams. Establish guardrails (lint rules, CI policies, performance budgets) that enforce best practices at scale. Improve build systems, CI/CD workflows, and developer tooling to optimize productivity and code quality. Partner with DevOps and infrastructure teams on Kubernetes (k8s) scaling, reliability, and observability.
  • Performance, Stability & Operational Excellence: Own site performance strategy including Core Web Vitals, caching, logging, monitoring, and tuning. Prevent outages through proactive architecture reviews and resilience planning. Drive production readiness standards and operational playbooks. Analyze system bottlenecks and implement scalable solutions across the platform.
  • Standards & Governance: Define coding standards and engineering best practices across React, TypeScript, Node.js, and Next.js. Collaborate with Living Design to ensure ADA compliance and consistent design system implementation. Lead technical reviews across feature teams to maintain platform integrity. Reduce tech debt through structured improvement initiatives.
  • Influence & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Product, UX, Infrastructure, Security, and international teams to align on scalable solutions. Mentor senior engineers and influence technical direction without direct authority. Drive alignment across global stakeholders while balancing innovation and platform stability. Serve as a trusted advisor for complex cross-team architectural challenges
