About The Position

Amentum is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Low-side LMS team in Hanover, MD. The team develops, deploys, and supports mission-focused cyber training solutions used across multiple locations. Team members work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment supporting the entire software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, software development, testing, deployment, infrastructure management, and operational support. Engineers work closely with instructors, developers, and system administrators to deliver reliable, realistic training capabilities. Unlike many software organizations where engineers are assigned to a single product or technology stack, members of the Low-side LMS team contribute across a diverse portfolio of applications, services, and supporting infrastructure. This provides opportunities to build broad technical expertise while collaborating with teammates to deliver integrated solutions throughout the software development lifecycle. This position is ideal for software engineers who enjoy solving complex technical challenges, learning new technologies, and applying their skills across a diverse portfolio of software, infrastructure, and operational systems.

Requirements

  • A working knowledge of both Windows and Linux platform is required.
  • Experience developing using one or more of the following languages: Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Java, or C++.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in web UI interface design using a variety of languages such as HTML, CSS, AJAX, JSON/XML, JavaScript/TypeScript, and JQuery or similar.
  • Experience using SQL/NoSQL and relational databases (MySQL/MongoDB preferred) required.
  • Demonstrate experience working in agile teams (backlog execution, sprint ceremonies, estimation, iterative delivery).

Nice To Haves

  • UI/UX specialist: Focus on designing and creating the student and instructor facing interfaces and need the following skills at a minimum: develop aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly front ends using frameworks like react, angular, and svelte.
  • UI/UX specialist: develop and implement test beds and use test suites such as jUnit or PyTest for robust testing practices.
  • UI/UX specialist: interface with API endpoints, databases, and other dataflow solutions.
  • UI/UX specialist: perform trend analysis of student activities and identify potential improvements to course delivery systems and interfaces.

  • Backend Service specialist: develop and implement test beds and use test suites such as jUnit or PyTest for robust testing practices.
  • Backend Service specialist: administer, configure, and maintain common Unix/Linux and Windows Server variants.
  • Backend Service specialist: create and configure virtual hosts and networks using VMware in support of developing real-world scenarios.
  • DevOps/Integration specialist: Focus on the management and maintenance of the virtualization and deployment solutions used to ensure rapid validated deployments of services and applications. You will need the following skills at a minimum: design and implement flexible and robust CI/CD pipelines to enhance the software development lifecycle using solutions such as GitLab.
  • DevOps/Integration specialist: plan, implement, and maintain scalable application and service deployments in an on-premises Kubernetes clusters using tools like helm, fleet, git, rancher, lens, or k9s.
  • DevOps/Integration specialist: develop and deploy applications, services, and systems within virtualized environments, preferably vSphere, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • DevOps/Integration specialist: support API and dataflow systems.
  • DevOps/Integration specialist: perform HTTPS certificate management.
  • DevOps/Integration specialist: design service, application, and network architectures to support deployment and data flow.
  • DevOps/Integration specialist: develop and implement test beds and use test suites such as jUnit or PyTest for robust testing practices.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, troubleshoot, and maintain software applications supporting cyber training environments.
  • Analyze requirements and develop technical solutions that support mission and customer needs.
  • Develop user interfaces, backend services, APIs, automation tools, and data processing solutions.
  • Contribute to the implementation and maintenance of software development pipelines.
  • Configure, deploy, and maintain applications in virtualized and containerized environments.
  • Develop and maintain databases, dataflows, scripts, and automation solutions.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of realistic cyber training environments and simulations.
  • Perform software testing, debugging, validation, and analysis of results.
  • Evaluate new technologies and contribute recommendations for improving applications and development processes.
  • Document software designs, configurations, processes, and operational procedures.
  • Collaborate with instructors, developers, system administrators, and other technical teams to improve training capabilities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing applications, workflows, and user experiences.
  • Design and implement features and services of moderate complexity, including APIs, data access layers, and UI components as applicable; document design decisions and interfaces.
  • Maintain and enhance automated grading/evaluation capabilities (e.g., parsing outputs, scoring logic, workflow automation) while protecting assessment integrity and restricted solutions.
  • Perform root-cause analysis for defects and production issues; implement fixes with regression coverage and document corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain integrations with external services/components (authentication/authorization touchpoints, reporting, data stores, file/object storage, etc.) as applicable to the environment.
  • Collaborate with QA/Test to define acceptance criteria, support test case development, and validate fixes in Dev/Test environments prior to production promotion.
  • Support controlled releases by producing implementation notes, configuration/dependency updates, and release notes; participate in change control and post-deployment verification as directed.
  • Apply secure coding practices appropriate to the environment (input validation, least privilege, secrets handling) and remediate vulnerabilities in code/dependencies as directed.
  • Demonstrate the ability to parse and understand existing code bases, contributing to the continued development of class management tools.
  • Perform trend analysis of student activities and identify potential improvements to course delivery systems and interfaces.
  • Develop software solutions using languages such as Python, Shell scripting or Node.js.
  • Develop and deploy applications, services, and systems within virtualized environments such as vSphere and Docker.
  • Create and manage applications using industry standard package managers (apt, yum, pip, npm, nuget, etc…)
  • Show proficiency in using source code management systems, with a focus on Git.
  • Apply valid software development pipelines to develop, test, document and deploy projects.
  • Use and receive tasking through project management systems such as Jira or GitLab.
  • Provide comprehensive documentation and support for various levels of customers.
  • Be a self-motivated individual that can think outside the box to stay ahead of issues that could prevent the successful delivery of course material and activities while supporting the team as a whole.
