About The Position

Join Walmart as a Distinguished Software Engineer, leading the design and development of scalable, cloud-native AI-powered systems that drive operational excellence and innovation. You will play a pivotal role in the development and implementation of our Microservices Platform. Your responsibilities will include improving our Service Mesh and Service Registry, debugging software applications, and ensuring optimal system performance. Collaborating with Fellows and software architects, you will help to transform requirements into software design, adhering to our architectural standards. Mentorship and innovation will be key aspects of your role, as well as ensuring that our engineering efforts align with strategic objectives. About the team: The Walmart Runtime Platform Core Services - PRISM team leads advanced technology initiatives, including Microservices platform, AgenticAI, and Unified Identity projects. This team designs and operates systems handling millions of requests per second, ensuring seamless scalability, robust performance, security, and resiliency. Focused on cloud-native architecture and AI-powered solutions, the team drives innovation and operational excellence across Walmart’s global ecosystem. Members collaborate to develop scalable platforms, optimize system reliability, and mentor peers, fostering continuous improvement and technical leadership to support Walmart’s evolving technology landscape.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in system-level technical leadership, delivering scalable, reliable cloud-native software and AI-powered systems.
  • Experience with network stacks, including thorough understanding of HTTP/s, TCP, UDP, TLS / mTLS, etc.
  • Mastery of at least one of :: Java, C++, Golang, Rust
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies like Docker, Kubernetes
  • Familiarity with cloud native environments such as Google Cloud and Azure.
  • Knowledge of microservice architecture patterns and best practices.
  • Familiarity of Service Mesh or Sidecar pattern, including technology stack such as Istio, Envoy
  • Experience with API design and development
  • Mentorship skills fostering engineering excellence and innovation across teams.
  • Problem-solving capabilities with a focus on optimizing systems and reducing operational friction.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • 8 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

  • Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 4 years' experience in software engineering or related area
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and implementation of our microservices platform projects to enhance the overall efficiency of our service-to-service communication.
  • Make service-to-service and agentic AI communication visible and reliable.
  • Oversee the service registry, a global control plane to control all services within the Walmart network.
  • Utilize Istio service mesh, and Envoy, a high-performance proxy, to manage traffic flows between microservices and AI agents and enforce access policies, and aggregate telemetry data.
  • Provide guidance to junior team members, fostering a culture of innovation and strategic thinking within the team.
