Software Engineer - Network Switching

Meta•Menlo Park, CA
•$183,997 - $257,000

About The Position

Meta is seeking a software engineer to help build and operate its global network infrastructure, which supports data centers and technologies including AI, Generative AI, recommendation engines, and the Metaverse. The role contributes to scalable distributed systems and software for Meta’s hyper-scale network, with a focus on switching technology and the network lifecycle from hardware development through operation. The engineer will design, develop, validate, and deploy control-plane and dataplane software for Meta’s network switch operating system across data center front-end, AI backend, and backbone networks. The role involves integrating with switch ASICs and system vendors, working across network engineering and operations teams, resolving system-level issues, improving performance, and supporting fleet-wide deployments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 7 years of software development experience in industry settings, or a PhD with at least 4 years of experience.
  • At least 3 years of relevant industry experience with network devices and products such as routers, switches, adapters, or load balancers, and an understanding of network routing protocols.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and at least one scripting language, such as Python or shell scripting.
  • Experience developing and automating test suites.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as hardware, operations, and test infrastructure, to define requirements and deliver integrated solutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with stream processing or time-series data pipelines for high-volume network telemetry.
  • Experience designing and implementing software for high-speed network processing, such as Layer 2, Layer 3, MPLS, SRv6, VxLAN, ACLs, QoS, RoCEv2, Mirroring, or SAI.
  • Experience with intent-based network management systems.
  • Experience with network devices such as routers, switches, or load balancers, and an understanding of network routing protocols.
  • Experience with software-defined networking (SDN), network operating systems, or network device APIs such as OpenConfig or gNMI.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, validate, and deploy control-plane and dataplane software for network switches across Meta’s data center front-end, AI backend, and backbone networks.
  • Partner with switch ASIC and system vendors on SDK integration, feature development, and platform bring-up.
  • Coordinate with network engineering, routing infrastructure, host networking, and transport teams; lead integration efforts and drive continuous development.
  • Debug complex system-level issues and lead performance tuning to optimize control-plane and dataplane performance.
  • Partner with network operations and deployment teams on fleet-wide rollouts and incident response.
  • Develop and automate test suites for the CI/CD framework and various components in collaboration with test infrastructure teams.
