Software Engineer, Robotics Fleet Optimization

Nimble Robotics•San Francisco, CA
•$140,000 - $210,000

About The Position

As a Software Engineer on Nimble’s Multi-Agent Systems team, you will design algorithms and software to coordinate large fleets of robots in high-throughput, real-world warehouse environments. Your work will influence robot efficiency and safety, and the capacity and scalability of intelligent fulfillment systems. You will architect high-performance distributed robotics software, develop multi-robot planning and coordination capabilities, and optimize algorithms to improve robustness, reliability, and scale. The role combines algorithm design with production engineering to address systems challenges affecting warehouse throughput and robot performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Robotics, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • 2–4 years of experience building production systems.
  • Strong software engineering background.
  • Proficiency in at least one systems programming language; Rust is preferred, with C++ also listed.
  • Strong understanding of algorithms, data structures, and performance optimization.
  • Ability to design and implement complex systems with high reliability and clarity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across a large codebase and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with multi-robot task planning, routing, or simulation systems.
  • Knowledge of warehouse automation, logistics software, or large-scale distributed systems.
  • Experience working with Rust.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, backend services, or event-driven architectures.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement high-performance, maintainable, and fault-tolerant robotics software.
  • Work across disciplines to diagnose issues, evaluate alternatives, and deliver robust technical solutions.
  • Contribute to the architecture and evolution of the fleet management and multi-agent orchestration stack.
  • Build and improve task-planning, multi-agent path-planning, multi-robot coordination, and external-system coordination algorithms to maximize warehouse throughput.
  • Create features that increase automation across picking, packing, sorting, induction, and routing workflows.
  • Design optimization algorithms that divide orders and workloads into robot tasks while minimizing congestion and idle time.
  • Analyze production performance data to understand system behavior, uncover bottlenecks, and verify feature impacts.
  • Use quantitative insights to inform prioritization, algorithm design, and long-term system improvements.
  • Drive feature areas end-to-end, including algorithm design, implementation, testing, deployment, and performance validation.
  • Own software infrastructure, continuous integration, production debugging, and on-call support for components built.
  • Participate in technical design reviews, documentation, and alignment with hardware, operations, and cloud engineering teams.
  • Help manage sprint planning, backlog prioritization, and feature launch coordination.
