Software Engineer, Systems & Performance

Loop•San Francisco, CA
•$175,000 - $225,000•Onsite

About The Position

Loop's systems team owns the foundational layer that supports the rest of the platform. As platform volume grows beyond what the current architecture was designed to handle, this role focuses on closing that scalability gap. The engineer works close to the code while concentrating on system design, database and runtime performance, and observability. The role requires understanding how product features work, partnering with product engineering teams to improve their systems, and applying deep expertise in at least one core technical area to solve high-impact production problems. The engineer will help shape Loop's engineering culture and approach to growth. The role is based in Loop's San Francisco office at least four days per week. Loop is open to candidates ranging from strong mid-level through senior. The position offers a base salary of $175,000 to $225,000 annually, equity eligibility, and benefits.

Requirements

  • At least three years of software engineering experience, including meaningful production experience with backend, platform, or infrastructure systems.
  • A track record of performance and scaling work on production systems, including the ability to explain what broke as load increased, how the issue was identified, and what was changed.
  • Deep expertise in at least one of PostgreSQL, Node.js performance, or cloud infrastructure such as AWS, with working familiarity across the other two areas.
  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to influence architecture decisions on teams the candidate does not own.
  • Ability to work in the San Francisco office at least four days per week.

  • Experience with high-throughput data or workflow systems.

Responsibilities

  • Set architectural direction for scale and partner with product engineering teams to achieve it.
  • Review designs with scalability in mind and raise the engineering bar across teams.
  • Own observability for the highest-load systems and improve performance monitoring to detect bottlenecks before they become incidents.
  • Identify and eliminate current platform performance bottlenecks, directly addressing difficult performance problems and production incidents and creating durable fixes.
  • Anticipate future architectural scaling limits and plan for them proactively.
  • Lead large-scale infrastructure and architecture migrations that cannot be solved through incremental tuning.
