Software Engineer, ML (Time Series Forecasting)

North•New York, NY
•$192,000 - $257,000

About The Position

North is hiring a Software Engineer, ML to own and improve the time series models behind its internal forecasting service. Forecasts support projected spend, budgets, and commitment purchases made on customers’ behalf, so forecast quality affects customer savings and unused commitments. The role is part of the Services team and will help evolve the shared service that delivers forecasts across North’s features, from model training and evaluation through production monitoring. The engineer will work closely with data scientists and the teams that use forecasts to make results understandable and actionable. The role has no fixed level; leveling will be based on experience and how the candidate works, using North’s engineering ladder. The role is hybrid in New York City, with an office in Dumbo, Brooklyn; team members typically work in the office two to three days per week. The position may also be remote within the United States.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of software or machine learning engineering experience, including shipping time series models to production and owning them after launch.
  • Deep experience with time series forecasting using both classical statistical methods and machine learning approaches, and the judgment to select appropriate methods.
  • Experience with time-aware validation, backtesting, and forecast accuracy metrics, including an understanding of their tradeoffs.
  • Experience monitoring production models, including drift, anomaly detection, and retraining.
  • Fluency in Python and SQL, and experience working with large datasets.
  • Experience collaborating with data scientists and explaining model behavior and uncertainty to people outside engineering.
  • Pragmatic, informed use of AI coding tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a data scientist or doing analysis work alongside ML engineering.
  • Experience with probabilistic forecasting.
  • Experience forecasting usage, demand, or spend across many accounts with different patterns.
  • Experience with cloud usage, billing, or pricing data.
  • Experience with AWS ML services.
  • Familiarity with FinOps concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Build and improve time series models for projected spend, budgets, and commitment recommendations across customers with varying sizes and usage patterns.
  • Partner with Services teammates to deploy models as a reliable shared service with clear interfaces.
  • Shape the forecasting service architecture, including model training, versioning, evaluation, and serving.
  • Improve evaluation, backtesting, and ongoing monitoring of forecast accuracy.
  • Build proactive detection and alerting for unusual forecasts and model drift.
  • Quantify forecast uncertainty, including through prediction intervals, so features can account for it.
  • Work with data scientists to translate forecast results and model changes into findings that product and business teams can act on.
  • Collaborate with the Commitments, Visibility, and Data teams to understand what each feature needs from a forecast.

Benefits

  • Unlimited PTO
  • 16 weeks of paid parental leave; birthing parents receive an additional 4 weeks at 50% pay
