Software Engineer IV

ARUP Laboratories Career•Salt Lake City, UT

About The Position

A Software Engineer IV is a senior engineer and leading contributor to software development projects, designing and delivering software products and services. The role takes responsibility for product quality, stability, and release readiness; applies broad experience and judgment to accomplish goals; mentors engineers; and coordinates technical efforts with adjacent teams. The engineer architects, builds, and maintains software products and services, including new systems and shared libraries. They make high-impact technical decisions, embed security, observability, performance, and reliability into systems designed for concurrency and scale, and evaluate and use AI development tools to improve team and individual productivity. The role defines technical requirements, evaluates data-modeling alternatives, and sets non-functional requirements for performance, scalability, and reliability. The position owns codebase health and production outcomes by establishing quality standards, testing strategies, coding practices, monitoring and alerting strategies, and release-readiness criteria. It diagnoses complex production issues, addresses technical debt, evaluates tools and frameworks, contributes technical insight to planning, and coordinates deployment needs with DevOps and Operations. The engineer mentors colleagues, collaborates across teams, explains technical decisions in terms of business and user impact, and works with medical directors and laboratory scientists to align solutions with clinical needs. The role also partners with product and project managers on roadmap priorities, documents architecture and design patterns, teaches technical concepts, and contributes to hiring through technical interviews. Other duties may be assigned.
