About The Position

Relay is a rapidly growing tech startup in Raleigh, NC, focused on revolutionizing frontline work. We develop smart, rugged radios and a connected cloud ecosystem that leverage voice and AI to empower frontline workers, who traditionally rely on outdated communication methods. Our mission is to transform communication into intelligence, enhancing safety, productivity, and empowerment for the workers who keep the world moving. We are seeking a motivated Software Engineer Intern, an undergraduate or graduate student expected to graduate in December 2027 or Spring 2028, to join our mobile device product team for a paid summer internship in 2027. This role offers the chance to build impactful technology for custom communication devices, working across the full device stack from Android application development and OS-level systems programming to embedded firmware and Linux hardware interfaces. Interns will gain hands-on experience contributing to a product that ships to customers every six weeks. High-performing interns may be considered for full-time roles post-graduation.

Requirements

Currently enrolled in a Computer Science or related technical field.
Expected graduation date of December 2027 or Spring 2028.
GPA of 3.5 or above.
Strong proficiency in C, Java, or Kotlin.
Experience programming Linux at or below the POSIX API layer, typically in C/C++.
Solid experience with scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or similar.
Comfort with desktop and server Linux distributions.
An analytical, methodical approach to problem-solving.
Strong communication skills and a habit of documenting what you build.
Ability to manage multiple workstreams and self-prioritize.
Genuine curiosity and drive to learn.

Nice To Haves

Android/AOSP systems programming experience.
Experience in embedded systems programming (e.g., NRF or ST-based products running Zephyr, ThreadX, or Linux).
Rust experience.
Familiarity with IP networking concepts (HTTP, TCP/UDP sockets).
Exposure to Agile development practices.

Responsibilities

Fix bugs and build new features for Android applications (Kotlin, Java).
Engage in OS-level programming, potentially touching the Linux Kernel, Java-based frameworks, shell scripts, or C/C++/Rust daemons.
Work on operating system tasks and hardware interfaces below the Android layer.
Develop new embedded products or microcontroller firmware.
Contribute to a product that ships to real customers every 6 weeks.
