About The Position

Relay is a rapidly growing tech startup in Raleigh, NC, focused on revolutionizing frontline work with smart, rugged radios and a connected cloud ecosystem. We aim to bridge the digital gap for the 80% of the global workforce that doesn't sit at a desk, transforming communication into action through voice and AI. This paid summer internship is for a Software Engineer Intern on the mobile device product team, targeting undergraduate or graduate students with an expected graduation date of December 2027 or Spring 2028. The internship offers hands-on experience across the full device stack, from Android application development and OS-level systems programming to embedded firmware and Linux hardware interfaces. Interns will work full-time in our Raleigh, NC headquarters. We utilize languages such as C, C++, Java, Kotlin, Rust, and Bash/Python, with devices running Android on custom in-house hardware and development environments being Linux-based. Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Computer Science or related technical field with a GPA of 3.5 or above.
  • Strong proficiency in C, Java, or Kotlin.
  • Experience programming Linux at or below the POSIX API layer, typically in C/C++.
  • Solid experience with scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or similar.
  • Comfort with desktop and server Linux distributions.
  • An analytical, methodical approach to problem-solving.
  • Strong communication skills and a habit of documenting what you build.
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams and self-prioritize.
  • Genuine curiosity and drive to learn.

Nice To Haves

  • Android/AOSP systems programming experience.
  • Experience in embedded systems programming (e.g., NRF or ST-based products running Zephyr, ThreadX, or Linux).
  • Rust experience.
  • Familiarity with IP networking concepts (HTTP, TCP/UDP sockets).
  • Exposure to Agile development practices.

Responsibilities

  • Fix bugs and build new features for Relay's custom communication devices, spanning Android application development and OS-level programming.
  • Contribute to the Linux Kernel, Java-based frameworks, shell scripts, or C/C++/Rust daemons.
  • Work on operating system tasks and hardware interfaces below the Android layer.
  • Develop new embedded products or microcontroller firmware.
