About The Position

Apple’s System Firmware and Diagnostics (SFD) team is seeking an enthusiastic Software Engineer Intern to work on core engineering platforms and AI-powered diagnostic systems for developing, testing, debugging, and manufacturing Apple hardware, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Home accessories. The role involves building cloud-native full-stack platforms for real-time hardware lab orchestration and autonomous LLM agent ecosystems to automate root-cause analysis across hardware and firmware telemetry datasets. The intern will design, develop, and scale full-stack web applications, distributed data pipelines, and multi-agent AI workflows used by hardware and firmware engineers worldwide. The role collaborates with System Firmware, Diagnostics, Hardware Validation, and Factory Engineering teams to turn hardware debugging workflows into software products. The team environment emphasizes technical innovation, rapid iteration, cross-functional collaboration, and autonomy.

Requirements

  • Be a student pursuing a BS or MS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI/ML, or an equivalent field.
  • Be available for an onsite internship in Shanghai for 6–12 months.
  • Have hands-on experience building LLM-powered applications, AI agents, or tool-use workflows using frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, or similar agentic architectures.
  • Have strong programming skills in Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript, with a solid foundation in data structures, algorithms, and software design.
  • Have hands-on experience with either backend web frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, Django, or Node.js, or modern frontend frameworks such as React or Vue.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Chinese.
  • Be a self-motivated problem solver with a strong ownership mindset and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, cross-functional engineering environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with RAG, embedding models, vector databases such as pgvector, ChromaDB, or Milvus, or graph databases such as Neo4j.
  • Experience with full-stack web development using Python and React.
  • Exposure to embedded systems, firmware debugging, hardware diagnostics, or system-level log analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and optimize autonomous LLM agents and multi-agent workflows for automated hardware and firmware failure triage.
  • Develop and enhance Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines, vector search indexes, and knowledge graphs to correlate device logs.
  • Create data-rich frontend interfaces and customizable real-time observability dashboards using React, TypeScript, and modern visualization libraries.
  • Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and QA engineers to gather feedback, evaluate AI agent accuracy, and continuously improve tool usability and system reliability.
  • Build full-stack platforms, distributed data pipelines, and AI workflows for hardware lab orchestration and debugging.
