Software Engineer, Infrastructure

Hex
•$214,000 - $285,000

About The Position

Hex is hiring a Software Engineer for its infrastructure team, which owns cloud infrastructure—including compute, networking, and datastores—as well as CI/CD and observability across multi-tenant and single-tenant environments. The team builds foundational systems used by every engineer at Hex. The role is intended to help address infrastructure projects arising from the company’s growth and changing workload-compute needs. The engineer will take ownership of selected projects from start to finish, improve existing systems, and contribute their perspective as Hex evolves its infrastructure tooling. During the first few months, the engineer and team will choose two or three areas of focus based on the candidate’s strengths and the team’s priorities. Potential projects include improving CI/CD speed, cost, and flexibility; automating single-tenant stack lifecycle operations; improving PostgreSQL performance, migrations, and capacity; reducing and improving visibility into infrastructure costs; strengthening workload and container isolation and supporting compliance work; and delivering customer-facing capabilities such as private connectivity and customer-defined networking.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience building and operating production infrastructure, including on-call.
  • Strong Kubernetes operations knowledge, including scheduling, networking, and failure modes.
  • Solid AWS fundamentals, including EKS, RDS, VPC networking, and IAM.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code; Terraform is preferred.
  • Ability to write and read enough application code to modify a pipeline, controller, or service.
  • Ability to turn vague, long-standing problems into shippable work independently.
  • Clear written communication, including design documents and runbooks.
  • Ability to improve the people around them, regardless of formal title.

Nice To Haves

  • Depth in networking, including VPC design, private connectivity such as PrivateLink or peering, DNS, TLS and certificate management, or agentic sandboxing.
  • Depth in PostgreSQL at scale, including replication, tuning, connection pooling, major version upgrades, or migrations under load.
  • Depth in deployment systems, including CI/CD platform ownership, build performance and cost, release management, or artifact management.

Responsibilities

  • Own selected infrastructure projects from start to finish and improve the systems involved.
  • Improve CI/CD pipelines for speed, cost, and flexibility.
  • Improve setup, teardown, partial teardown, and updates for single-tenant stacks.
  • Address performance, migrations, and capacity for the multi-tenant production PostgreSQL database.
  • Improve infrastructure spend visibility and reduce costs.
  • Improve workload and container isolation and contribute to compliance work.
  • Build customer-facing infrastructure capabilities, including private connectivity, customer-defined networking, and easier-to-operate single-tenant deployments.
  • Write clear design documents and runbooks that engineers outside the infrastructure team can follow.
  • Participate in operating production infrastructure, including on-call.

Benefits

  • Equity
  • Comprehensive health benefits
  • Flexible paid time off
