Software Engineer III

Pearson•United States,
•$150,000 - $170,000

About The Position

The Software Engineer III designs, builds, and maintains Ruby on Rails services and APIs alongside modern JavaScript/React frontends, with responsibility for quality, performance, and reliability. The role leads complex, well-scoped features and systems from design through delivery, writes clear and well-tested code, simplifies services and patterns, and helps reduce technical debt. It also contributes to platform evolution across services, codebases, and domains; partners with external vendors and Product and Customer Success stakeholders; and promotes secure, scalable, cloud-native web application development. The engineer mentors junior colleagues through code reviews, feedback, and knowledge sharing. They use AI-assisted development tools for coding, testing, documentation, debugging, and learning, applying sound judgment to validate AI-generated output and use these tools responsibly.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of professional software development experience.
  • Proficiency with Ruby on Rails, React, AWS, and PostgreSQL.
  • Track record of making high-impact technical decisions in complex production environments, shipping well-tested code, and providing constructive code reviews.
  • Excellent cross-functional communication with engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience in software architecture, system design, and scalability, with a strong hands-on background.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting junior engineers.
  • Experience with distributed or service-oriented systems and asynchronous, event-driven communication between services.
  • Comfort working across multiple codebases and ramping up quickly in unfamiliar systems.
  • Comfort using AI tools for coding, testing, documentation, and learning, with the judgment to validate AI-generated code and determine when to rely on it.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience designing, deploying, and operating production workloads on AWS and Azure.
  • Experience building and improving CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment practices to increase team delivery velocity.
  • Experience integrating with or building alongside third-party or vendor-delivered services.
  • Strong understanding of web application security best practices and a track record of improving security across a codebase.
  • Experience with design systems, component libraries, or advanced frontend tooling.
  • Experience with scalability, resilience, or performance work at scale.
  • Experience with messaging or event-streaming systems such as Apache Pulsar or Apache Kafka.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain Ruby on Rails services and APIs and JavaScript/React frontends, ensuring their quality, performance, and reliability.
  • Lead the end-to-end design and delivery of complex, well-scoped features and systems.
  • Write clear, maintainable, well-tested code; simplify services and patterns; and pay down technical debt.
  • Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, feedback, and knowledge sharing.
  • Evolve the platform to support new services and capabilities, including work across adjacent codebases and domains.
  • Partner with external vendors and Product and Customer Success stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions.
  • Use AI-assisted tools for coding, testing, documentation, debugging, and learning, while validating their output and exercising sound engineering judgment.
  • Follow and promote best practices for secure, scalable, cloud-native web application development.
