About The Position

Education Advanced, Inc. is a rapidly growing K-12 educational technology company that creates operational software to help educators work more efficiently. Evaluation is a teacher and staff observation and evaluation product built as a Ruby on Rails application, hosted on AWS, and equipped with AI-powered features. The Software Engineer III will own significant parts of Evaluation and work across its Rails application, AI-powered features, data integrations, and cloud infrastructure. After a structured onboarding period, the engineer will help shape the product and its architecture. This is a remote role with core availability during US Central Time business hours. The team emphasizes ownership, collaboration, privacy, and responsible use of AI throughout the software development lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience building and operating production web applications, including recent hands-on Ruby on Rails experience with Ruby, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Strong relational database skills with MySQL or similar, including schema design, indexing, query performance, and safe migrations in a multi-tenant application.
  • Hands-on experience writing Rails automated tests, such as RSpec tests, at unit and integration levels.
  • Hands-on experience deploying, running, and debugging applications in AWS, including containers, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code.
  • Solid understanding of secure web development, including topics such as OWASP Top 10, authentication and authorization, input validation, and secrets management.
  • Daily, hands-on professional use of AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, or OpenAI Codex, for multi-step work beyond autocomplete, including building features, refactoring, writing tests, and exploring unfamiliar code.
  • Ability to direct AI tools with clear specifications and context, break work into small, checkable steps, and use tests and code review to identify incorrect, insecure, or fabricated output.
  • Sound judgment about AI and data safety, including what code and data must not be shared with AI tools, particularly student and educator data.
  • Demonstrated ability to own ambiguous work end to end, from design through delivery and support, without needing it broken down.
  • Ability to work productively in a mature codebase and improve it without stalling delivery.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication for asynchronous, cross-time-zone teamwork, including explaining technical tradeoffs to non-engineers.
  • Experience working in an Agile team, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives.
  • Availability during core US Central Time business hours.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building production LLM-powered features, including prompt design, AI output testing and evaluation, cost and latency tradeoffs, and safeguards against unsafe or low-quality results.
  • Experience with managed AI services from a major cloud provider.
  • Experience integrating AI tools into a team's development process, such as shared repository instructions, reusable prompts, or custom agents that help tools follow team standards.
  • Experience introducing or expanding automated testing in an existing codebase.
  • Frontend modernization experience in a server-rendered Rails application, such as Hotwire, Stimulus, or a component-based approach.
  • Accessibility remediation experience against WCAG 2.1 AA.
  • K-12 or public-sector software background, or experience with student information system data and student data privacy.
  • Experience mentoring engineers earlier in their career.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, ship, and support Evaluation features from product discussions through release and production support.
  • Build and improve AI-powered product features by integrating large language models into user workflows and designing prompts, safeguards, and quality checks.
  • Build and maintain reliable, high-quality data integrations between Evaluation and other systems.
  • Lead roadmap-driven technical improvements, including simplifying configuration, reducing technical debt, and modernizing the application while maintaining delivery momentum.
  • Write clean, high-quality, testable, secure, and maintainable code, and strengthen automated testing practices.
  • Build and operate services in AWS using CI/CD and infrastructure as code; troubleshoot production issues across the application and infrastructure.
  • Meet FERPA, state student-privacy, and WCAG accessibility requirements as part of regular delivery.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools for planning, coding, testing, code review, and documentation; verify their output and take responsibility for shipped code.
  • Help shape team practices for AI-assisted development, including shared conventions, reusable prompts and instructions, and safe-use guardrails.
  • Partner with Product Management to refine requirements, participate in backlog refinement and sprint planning, and implement scalable, secure solutions from specifications.
  • Mentor teammates through code review, pairing, and technical planning, and write documentation that helps others work confidently in the system.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
