Software Engineer III, Infrastructure

Google•Kirkland, WA
•$147,000 - $210,000

About The Position

Google software engineers build technologies and products that serve users at massive scale, working across areas such as distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, and data storage. Engineers work on projects critical to Google and may have opportunities to move between teams and projects as business needs evolve. In this role, you will optimize Lustre on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and help AI/ML customers run training and inference workloads on GCP. Lustre is a parallel file system designed to scale to petabytes of data and provide high-throughput, low-latency storage access for large datasets and thousands of GPUs, including for large language model training. You will work with customers and partner teams to improve Lustre performance and integrate its features with GCP technologies. Individual pay is determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. The listed US compensation is $147,000–$210,000 USD, plus a 15% bonus target, equity, and benefits.

  • At least 2 years of experience with open-source or developer technologies.
  • At least 2 years of software development experience, or 1 year of software development experience in an industry setting with an advanced degree.
  • Experience with performance analysis and computer architecture.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • 2 years of experience in Linux kernel programming.
  • Experience with Lustre Parallel File Systems.
  • Experience investigating and tuning storage performance.
  • Strong programming ability in one or more languages, including C, and a solid understanding of general data structures and algorithms.

Responsibilities

  • Write product or system development code.
  • Measure Lustre performance, investigate bottlenecks, implement performance improvements, and collaborate with teams across GCP to realize Lustre’s potential.
  • Work with customers on Lustre deployments to diagnose problems and optimize performance; help customers profile workloads and tune them for GCP.
  • Triage product or system issues and debug, track, and resolve them by analyzing root causes and their impact on hardware, network, service operations, and quality.
  • Develop Lustre features that integrate with GCP technologies and enable customers to run AI/ML workloads on GCP.
  • Collaborate with partner teams such as GKE, GCS, Vertex AI, and GCE to optimize the GCP stack end to end.
