Software Engineer II, AI Security

Tanium•Durham, NC
•$154,000 - $236,000

About The Position

Tanium is hiring a Software Engineer II to help build an AI Security solution that enables large enterprises to secure AI agents and the endpoints they run on. This full-stack role emphasizes backend engineering and involves designing and developing high-scale, distributed systems that provide customers visibility into and control over agentic AI across their environments. The role calls for building reliable, performant services at scale, applying security principles, and working with technologies used by AI agents and agent harnesses, including LLM integrations, tool-calling frameworks, and the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The engineer will build services and integrations using LLM APIs, tool-calling frameworks, and MCP, and develop retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and data pipelines. They will contribute to Tanium products with an agile team, develop and test product ideas from the ground up with product management input, and work on common components and higher-level services supporting security, operations, and auditing. This includes services for consolidating endpoint data, handling time-series data for dashboards and reporting, and exposing data externally through GraphQL. The position also involves using AI coding assistants and agent tooling in daily development, and exercising sound judgment when reviewing, refactoring, and debugging AI-generated code. Tanium describes itself as the Autonomous IT company and emphasizes collaboration, respect, and diversity. The position is full-time, with an annual base salary range of $154,000 to $236,000, plus equity awards and benefits.
