The U.S. Consumer Services and Membership Digital Experiences Technology team (USCDT) brings together foundational strategic technology capabilities in digital experience engineering (Mobile and Web), marketing and advertising technology, enterprise communications, travel and lifestyle, and dining technology. It employs a ground-breaking focus with development responsibilities for customer-facing capabilities that deepen and expand digital engagement, as well as core technical capabilities that cut across business lines and customer segments. We’re looking for an experienced Software Engineer ll to work on the mobile payments solutions that will be used by tens of millions of cardholders around the world. We want someone who is super creative and enjoys solving tough problems. You should be able to come up with brilliant solutions that no one else can, and be obsessive about UI/UX design and user experience. You’ll be part of the Digital Payments Engineering team whose mandate is to develop new products and platforms for American Express customers. Payments Engineering’s aim is to build interactive experiences at all touch points of a consumer's journey whether before, at, or after the time of purchase. The products will range from new payment vehicles and partnerships with other payment entities to interactive web experiences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2+ years of software development experience, preferably developing backend applications using Java.
  • Understanding of RESTful API design and development principles.
  • Familiarity with JSON, HTTP, Web Services, and data structure fundamentals.
  • Understanding of relational and/or NoSQL databases.
  • Familiarity with automated testing frameworks such as JUnit and Mockito.
  • Experience or familiarity with source control and CI/CD tools such as Git, Jenkins, or equivalent technologies.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, product owners, and other stakeholders.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable backend applications and microservices using Java.
  • Work as part of an Agile engineering team, contributing to user story analysis, technical design, development, testing, and production support.
  • Develop and integrate RESTful APIs following established API design and security best practices.
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested, and reusable code while following software engineering best practices.
  • Work with relational and NoSQL databases and develop efficient data access patterns.
  • Troubleshoot application issues, analyze logs and metrics, and contribute to performance and reliability improvements.
  • Participate in code reviews and collaborate with engineers to continuously improve code quality and engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with product owners, engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Continuously learn new technologies, frameworks, and engineering practices and apply them to solve business problems.
