About The Position

Woven by Toyota is Toyota’s software and mobility subsidiary. Its Arene platform combines an SDK, tools, and data capabilities to support software-defined vehicles, software reuse across hardware and vehicle generations, and continuous improvement, including over-the-air updates. Arene is already deployed in production and is expanding across Toyota’s vehicle lineup. The Arene Applied Engineering team works with Toyota customers to understand their objectives, challenges, workflows, and technical environments. The team translates customer needs into product direction and engineering requirements, develops solutions using the Arene platform, and takes ownership from discovery through deployment and ongoing improvement. This is a hands-on, individual-contributor engineering role focused on production C++ and software-hardware integration. The engineer develops software that works with real vehicle hardware, ECUs, sensors, networks, and compute platforms, and helps make software portable and reusable across vehicle platforms while meeting real-time and safety requirements. Work spans implementation, testing, hardware-in-the-loop or bench setups, vehicle testing, deployment, and continued platform improvement. The role is not a pure research or cloud position; it sits at the software-hardware boundary on production vehicle programs.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of experience with strong modern C++, preferably C++14 or C++17, including the ability to work in constrained, safety-minded environments.
  • Experience writing production code that ships on real systems, rather than only prototypes.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, embedded engineering, or a similar domain.
  • Hands-on experience integrating software with hardware in embedded, automotive, robotics, or self-driving contexts.
  • Personal experience bringing code up on physical systems, debugging interface, timing, or resource issues, and making it work reliably.
  • Solid understanding of embedded or resource-constrained environments, real-time considerations, and low-level hardware interaction, or the ability to ramp up quickly.
  • Experience with vehicle or robotics communication protocols such as CAN or Ethernet, and/or middleware or IPC patterns.
  • Demonstrated ability to own features end to end, including design, implementation, testing, debugging, and delivery.
  • Strong debugging and systems troubleshooting skills.
  • Comfort working in collaborative, cross-functional, and often multi-site environments.
  • Clear technical communication.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in software integration, embedded systems, or vehicle software at a self-driving, autonomous, or advanced ADAS company.
  • Automotive experience in ADAS, cockpit, body, or related domains, or exposure to ISO 26262, AUTOSAR, or MISRA-style practices.
  • Experience with Linux-based vehicle systems, QNX, or similar RTOS; Bazel or similar build systems; or CI/CD for embedded workflows.
  • Familiarity with HIL, simulation-to-hardware continuity, or virtualized testing environments.
  • Prior work on software platforms, SDKs, or abstraction layers intended for reuse across hardware.
  • Knowledge of ADAS or autonomy sensors such as cameras, radar, and lidar, or vehicle electrical architectures.
  • Interest in or some exposure to functional safety, security, or performance optimization under constraints.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and deliver production-quality C++ software components, middleware, abstraction layers, drivers, and services that integrate with vehicle hardware, including ECUs, sensors, networks, and compute platforms.
  • Own software-hardware integration, including bringing software up on hardware, debugging issues across the stack, and driving solutions to production quality.
  • Develop and refine hardware-agnostic abstractions and APIs to support software portability and reuse across ECUs, sensors, vehicle platforms, and generations while meeting real-time and safety requirements.
  • Contribute to Arene SDK and vehicle platform elements used for ADAS, cockpit, or related domains.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and partners on integration, testing, and deployment.
  • Work across coding, unit and integration testing, HIL or bench setups, vehicle testing, and feedback into the platform.
  • Support or build tools that reduce manual integration friction.
  • Debug complex issues involving software, hardware interfaces such as CAN and Ethernet, timing, and system behavior.
  • Produce technical documentation and design artifacts as needed.
  • Collaborate with global teams, including Japan-based partners, and contribute to code reviews, practical engineering practices, and continuous improvement.
