Software Engineer II - Slack Developer Workspaces

About The Position
The Experience Developer Workspaces team operates the remote development environments Slack engineers use to build and test Slack on AWS and Kubernetes. The team is developing isolated sandboxes where coding agents can run development toolchains, open pull requests, and shut down when finished. This role focuses on infrastructure and operations, with early ownership of production systems, participation in on-call, and contributions to safe use of AI agents at Slack.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of experience building and operating production systems.
- Experience in infrastructure, SRE, DevOps, or platform engineering, including on-call experience for production systems.
- Strong knowledge of AWS, including EC2, networking, and IAM.
- Experience managing infrastructure as code with Terraform or a similar tool.
- Ability to write solid code in Go or Python.
- Regular use of AI coding tools and informed opinions about their limitations.
- Demonstrated ownership and initiative when systems break.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Firecracker, KVM, or other virtualization technologies.
- Experience running Kubernetes in production.
- Security experience, including VM or container isolation, vulnerability management, or threat modeling.
- Comfort with Linux internals and networking.
- Experience on a developer productivity or platform team.
Responsibilities
- Scale the AI sandbox fleet through capacity planning, safe rollouts, image builds, and monitoring alerts.
- Strengthen isolation between agents, sandboxes, and the rest of Slack through network separation, egress controls, secrets handling, and patching.
- Operate and improve remote development environments, including Terraform, machine images, and automation that pauses idle environments to reduce costs.
- Build useful observability, including SLOs, dashboards, and accessible logs.
- Join the weekly on-call rotation after ramping up, respond to incidents, and automate fixes.
- Use AI agents extensively in daily work.
