About The Position

Microsoft is hiring a Software Engineer for the Cloud+AI Silver Team, which deploys and operates a Secure Work Area and collaboration infrastructure in an air-gapped environment. The role supports engineers who enable Azure services for internal and external customers in highly secured and regulated industries. Software and systems must satisfy security policy and assurance requirements for public- and private-sector customers. The position focuses on building and operating reliable live services, debugging and resolving issues, using telemetry and analytics to improve system health, and creating scalable solutions and developer tools. The engineer serves in a rotational on-call capacity and may act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), responding to incidents within SLA timeframes and coordinating restoration and escalation. Candidates must hold an active TS/SCI clearance and be willing and eligible to upgrade to TS/SCI with polygraph, maintain the required clearance, and meet citizenship and background-screening requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 4+ years of technical engineering experience coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Must have an active TS/SCI clearance and be willing and eligible to upgrade to TS/SCI with polygraph; must maintain the required clearance.
  • Must meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements before offer and after hire, including the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Must verify the stated security clearance and provide clearance verification information before an offer.
  • Must verify U.S. citizenship due to citizenship-based legal restrictions.

Nice To Haves

  • 4+ years of experience with PowerShell, C#, or C++.
  • Experience working on large-scale distributed services with on-call responsibilities.
  • Ability to build and influence broadly toward common goals and priorities.
  • Ownership of the end-to-end project lifecycle, with solid project management and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Debug products proactively and reactively by writing and developing code, using debugging tools, and examining logs, telemetry, and other evidence; conduct retrospective debugging to identify root causes.
  • Maintain live-service operations through rotational on-call work, implement solutions and mitigations for complex performance or functionality issues, escalate when needed, and review and write postmortems.
  • Act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), follow and develop playbooks, monitor systems for degradation or interruptions, notify stakeholders, initiate restoration actions, respond within SLA timeframes, reduce incident volume, and escalate issues to appropriate owners.
  • Integrate instrumentation to gather telemetry on system behavior, including performance, reliability, availability, usage, and safety; use telemetry feedback to inform designs and create notifications or dashboards.
  • Collect, classify, and analyze system and bug-health metrics, and use data analytics and integration to guide product refinement and engineering decisions.
  • Build, enhance, reuse, contribute to, and identify software developer tools that support creating, debugging, and maintaining product code; use open source where possible and share best practices with others.
  • Define and develop standardized, repeatable, scalable solutions to ensure quality.
  • Embody Microsoft's culture and values.
