Microsoft•Reston, VA

About The Position

Microsoft’s Cloud+AI Silver Team is responsible for deploying and operating a Secure Work Area, including collaboration infrastructure in an air-gapped environment. The Software Engineer will work with engineers who enable Azure services for internal and external customers in highly secured and regulated industries. Systems and software must meet the security policy and assurance requirements of public- and private-sector customers. The role focuses on production reliability for large-scale online products and services. The engineer develops and uses code, debugging tools, logs, and telemetry to prevent and investigate issues; maintains live services on a rotational on-call basis; and implements mitigations for service problems. The position also contributes to incident response, telemetry and analytics, and software developer tools, while helping create standardized, repeatable, and scalable solutions. The role requires an active TS/SCI clearance and willingness and eligibility to upgrade to TS/SCI with polygraph, which must be maintained.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 4+ years of technical engineering experience coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Must have an active TS/SCI clearance and be willing and eligible to upgrade to TS/SCI with polygraph; must maintain the clearance.
  • Must meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements before an offer and after hire.
  • Must successfully verify the stated security clearance for federal government customer requirements; clearance verification information will be requested before an offer.
  • Must pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Must provide verification of U.S. citizenship due to citizenship-based legal restrictions.

  • Conduct retrospective debugging to identify root causes.
  • Maintain live-service operations on a rotational, on-call basis.
  • Implement solutions and mitigations for complex issues affecting live-service performance or functionality, escalating as needed.
  • Review and write issue postmortems and share insights with the team.
  • Act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), follow and develop playbooks, monitor systems for degradation or interruptions, alert stakeholders, and initiate restoration actions.
  • Respond within Service Level Agreement (SLA) timeframes and escalate issues to appropriate owners.
  • Reduce incident volume by analyzing incidents globally and providing broad resolutions.
  • Integrate instrumentation to gather telemetry about system behavior, including performance, reliability, availability, usage, and safety.
  • Use telemetry feedback loops to inform subsequent designs; create outputs such as notifications and dashboards.
  • Collect, classify, and analyze metrics, and use data integration and analytics to refine products and inform engineering decisions.
  • Build, enhance, reuse, contribute to, and identify developer tools used to create, debug, and maintain product code.
  • Use open-source tools when possible and develop skills with tools outside areas of expertise.
