Software Engineer II

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$102,100 - $219,200

About The Position

Microsoft's Azure Data engineering team builds data platform products, including Microsoft Fabric and Azure Monitor. The Azure Monitor team develops services that help customers monitor, detect, troubleshoot, and mitigate service issues. Its portfolio includes Log Analytics, Application Insights, Container Insights, Hosted Prometheus, Azure Managed Grafana, and the platform on which Microsoft Sentinel is built. The services operate at hyperscale, processing over 1.5 exabytes of logs daily and tracking over 100 billion active metrics. The Software Engineer II will help build and evolve Azure Monitor backend systems. The role involves owning complex, globally distributed systems, contributing to architecture across teams, improving reliability and security at scale, and helping apply AI-assisted and agentic capabilities safely to infrastructure operations. The engineer will build services that scale across the fleet and enable telemetry scenarios for workloads throughout Azure. The team emphasizes collaboration, shipping early and often, accountability, technical quality, and continuous learning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and at least 2 years of technical engineering experience coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Fabric, AWS, or similar cloud computing platforms.
  • Experience using modern web frameworks such as React or Fluent UI.
  • Experience in monitoring and observability.
  • Experience with modern AI technologies, including Generative AI, LLMs, RAG-based solutions, and cloud-scale data platforms.
  • Ability to apply AI-driven innovations to improve developer productivity, operational efficiency, and customer experiences.
  • Ability to work in an environment emphasizing learning, iteration, and improvement in a tight feedback loop.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, deploy, and operate highly available distributed services and automation for configuring and migrating large-scale telemetry workloads across the fleet.
  • Build and enhance APIs, tools, and subsystems for telemetry collection, routing, storage, and efficient data access.
  • Integrate capabilities such as machine-learning-based anomaly detection and data validation to improve platform intelligence and insights.
  • Implement monitoring, alerting, and diagnostics; help ensure production services run reliably through on-call rotations and incident response.
  • Collaborate with partner teams to deliver end-to-end observability solutions and contribute to design reviews and engineering best practices.
  • Help evolve the team's use of AI by championing agentic development practices and sharing repeatable patterns that improve engineering velocity and quality.
  • Train and evolve AI to assist with non-coding scenarios, including site reliability engineering, support, and administration.
  • Embody Microsoft's culture and values.
