Software Engineer II - Applied AI
About The Position
As a Software Engineer II – Applied AI on McGraw Hill’s AI Platform team, you will develop generative AI-enabled applications and integrate AI solutions across the full stack. You will help build reliable, maintainable, and scalable AI platform tools and applications that support students and educators. This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States. The role involves independently scoping and implementing project-level solutions, owning development tasks, and delivering quality code on time. You will collaborate with data scientists, product managers, and engineers; keep current with AI advances; and help integrate new capabilities into applications. You will also contribute to accessibility, security, privacy compliance, CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, and engineering practices that improve software quality, stability, performance, resiliency, and maintainability.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience in product or enterprise software development.
- Hands-on full-stack experience with backend/API technologies such as Python or Node.js; frontend technologies such as Angular or React; databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or DynamoDB; and infrastructure such as AWS/Azure and Terraform.
- Experience developing scalable enterprise AI-powered solutions using technologies such as Azure AI Search, Azure OpenAI Service, Amazon Bedrock, or similar.
- Recent focus on generative AI and hands-on experience with LLM frameworks such as LangChain.
- Practical knowledge of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), including implementing and optimizing RAG models.
- Familiarity with Model Context Protocol (MCP) and exposure to building or integrating MCP servers or clients connecting LLMs and AI agents with external tools and data sources.
- Technical ability in software development, testing, monitoring, performance tuning, and deployment pipelines.
- Strong technical communication and collaboration skills.
- Passion for technology and commitment to staying current with AI advancements.
- Experience implementing accessible features in web applications.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, implement, and maintain AI platforms and AI-powered tools and applications, including generative AI solutions.
- Scope and implement project-level solutions with minimal guidance.
- Own development tasks within an application or service and deliver code on time with a quality mindset.
- Develop and maintain software that complies with accessibility standards such as WCAG 2.2 AA, incorporating accessibility practices into coding, testing, and design.
- Collaborate with data scientists, product managers, and other engineers to deliver high-quality solutions.
- Stay current with AI advancements and explore opportunities to integrate new AI capabilities into applications.
- Implement application security best practices and comply with applicable data privacy and protection regulations.
- Contribute to CI/CD processes to support smoother releases.
- Contribute to cloud infrastructure, optimizing performance, cost, and security.
- Promote engineering practices that support software quality, stability, performance, resiliency, and maintainability.
