About The Position

StarTree is hiring a Software Engineer I to work on the distributed systems behind Apache Pinot, a distributed analytics database used for real-time applications at massive scale. The role focuses on solving problems in performance, reliability, concurrency, and data infrastructure. The engineer will take ownership of meaningful work in a high-ownership startup environment and contribute to systems that serve production customer workloads.

The position involves owning distributed systems problems end-to-end, collaborating with engineering teammates to identify and prioritize impactful work, and improving engineering quality while maintaining reliable and operationally lean systems. The role also includes mentoring and growing engineers while learning from experienced engineers.

Requirements

• 0–2 years of experience.
• Strong distributed systems fundamentals and experience solving problems at scale.
• Ability to take an idea from concept through implementation and deliver it to production.
• Ownership of quality and customer experience, with a focus on reliability, observability, performance, and ease of use.
• Adaptability and flexibility to take on important work and adjust to changing priorities.
• Curiosity, positivity, and resilience; comfort navigating ambiguity and uncertainty with a constructive, problem-solving mindset.
• Comfort using AI tools in everyday engineering workflows and willingness to continually learn and integrate AI into building, debugging, testing, and problem-solving.

Nice To Haves

• Java experience; the platform is Java-based, but Java is not a hard requirement.

Responsibilities

• Own and drive impactful distributed systems problems end-to-end, from inception through production launch.
• Collaborate with the engineering team to identify and prioritize impactful problems and projects for the company.
• Raise the engineering quality bar and help keep systems reliable and operationally lean.
• Mentor and grow engineers while learning from experienced engineers.
