About The Position

As a Software Engineer supporting business-built applications, you will help Stout teams turn working prototypes into secure, reliable applications. You will work directly with colleagues who develop their own tools, assess the code and architecture they create, and provide the engineering expertise needed for production deployment and long-term support. The role focuses on improving the correctness, security, maintainability, and reliability of applications created by business and domain teams; helping teams move prototypes into production with appropriate testing, deployment practices, and operational controls; creating reusable development patterns; and connecting business applications securely to enterprise systems, data, and APIs. The position balances hands-on engineering with coaching colleagues to help them build and maintain applications responsibly. The engineer will review and strengthen applications, establish source control and CI/CD practices, support secure Azure hosting, implement secrets management and identity controls, develop integrations, and advise business stakeholders on practical technical solutions. The role also includes troubleshooting, documenting support procedures, and coaching colleagues while taking ownership of work requiring professional engineering expertise.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong full-stack development skills in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, and Node.
  • Ability to read, debug, refactor, and improve applications developed by others, and adapt to new languages and frameworks.
  • Working knowledge of Azure application hosting, including App Service, Static Web Apps, Functions, or Container Apps, and Microsoft Entra ID authentication.
  • Experience with Git, pull requests, source control practices, and CI/CD workflows such as Azure DevOps.
  • Sound application security practices involving secrets management, dependency review, input validation, and least-privilege access.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, raise issues promptly, and communicate effectively with non-developer stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing integrations with modern APIs and services.
  • Experience handling sensitive or regulated data, particularly in financial services or private equity.
  • Infrastructure-as-code experience with Bicep or ARM and broader DevOps experience.

Responsibilities

  • Review Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, and Node applications for defects, security risks, dependency concerns, and maintainability.
  • Refactor and strengthen prototypes through appropriate architecture, error handling, automated tests, validation, and documentation.
  • Bring applications into Git-based source control, establish CI/CD pipelines, and support secure deployment and hosting in Azure App Service, Static Web Apps, Functions, or Container Apps.
  • Implement secure secrets management through Azure Key Vault and authentication and authorization through Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Build and maintain starter templates, reusable components, example repositories, and standard development workflows for business teams.
  • Develop secure integrations with enterprise systems, data sources, and APIs, applying least-privilege access and appropriate validation.
  • Apply dependency and software supply-chain checks, secrets scanning, input validation, and code review standards before production release.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to translate application requirements into practical technical solutions and advise on tradeoffs.
  • Troubleshoot application issues, improve deployment reliability, and document operational support procedures.
  • Coach colleagues on sound development practices while taking direct ownership of work that requires professional engineering expertise.
  • Improve the correctness, security, maintainability, and reliability of applications created by business and domain teams.
  • Help teams move promising prototypes into production with appropriate testing, deployment practices, and operational controls.
  • Create reusable development patterns that allow colleagues to build useful tools without introducing unnecessary maintenance risk.
  • Connect business applications securely to enterprise systems, data, and APIs.
  • Balance hands-on engineering with coaching to help colleagues build and maintain applications responsibly.
  • Use sound judgment to determine when to coach a business colleague and when to take direct ownership of an engineering task.
  • Approach inherited code with curiosity, care, and a focus on practical improvements.
  • Communicate technical risks and recommendations clearly to colleagues with different levels of development experience.
  • Balance speed of delivery with testing, security, maintainability, and production reliability.
  • Adapt to varied projects and collaborate with multiple business and technology teams.
  • Take accountability for follow-through and deliver dependable applications and thoughtful support.
