Software Engineer, Automation

DigitalOceanSeattle, WA
$97,600 - $122,000Hybrid

About The Position

DigitalOcean is seeking early-career, general-purpose Software Engineers to join the Physical Infrastructure Engineering team. The primary goal of this role is to leverage AI tools and technology to automate manual and repetitive tasks, thereby increasing efficiency for the teams. The engineer will collaborate with technical program managers and infrastructure teams to understand current workflows, identify manual steps, and implement reliable automation solutions to enable faster organizational scaling and capacity deployment. This role is designed for engineers who embrace AI-assisted development, using tools like Cursor and Claude as their primary development environment. The ideal candidate will possess strong judgment, the ability to verify and reject code, and the skill to identify potential issues before they arise. A positive attitude, self-drive, motivation to add value, and a hunger for new challenges are essential.

Requirements

  • Some exposure to Python or Go, through coursework, internships, personal projects, or early professional experience (roughly 0 to 2 years).
  • Comfort using Linux (Ubuntu LTS), or eagerness to learn quickly.
  • Familiarity with shell scripting and git.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfort working in an asynchronous, remote environment.
  • Openness to constructive feedback.

Nice To Haves

  • A passion for building quickly, eliminating manual work, scaling intelligently, and collaborating openly.
  • A default toward AI-assisted development (Cursor, Claude, or similar), and curiosity about getting more out of these tools as they evolve.
  • Good judgment about your own work: an instinct for what needs checking, and a habit of knowing what you don't know and raising it early.
  • Some exposure to CI/CD concepts is a plus (we use GitHub Actions and Concourse).

Responsibilities

  • Write automation primarily in Golang and Python, utilizing AI tools as the default method for coding and iteration.
  • Partner with TPMs and infrastructure teams to understand existing workflows, identify manual and repetitive tasks, and automate them.
  • Manage automation workflows end-to-end, from identifying toil to building and shipping reliable automation.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across infrastructure to identify and automate manual, repetitive processes.
  • Contribute to tooling that enhances hardware and capacity visibility across DigitalOcean's global infrastructure.
  • Present work to engineering groups.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects within the Hardware Lifecycle Engineering platform.
  • Develop simplified automation systems for other groups to use and understand.

Benefits

  • Competitive array of benefits to support you from our Employee Assistance Program to Local Employee Meetups to flexible time off policy.
  • Reimbursement for relevant conferences, training, and education.
  • Access to LinkedIn Learning's 10,000+ courses.
  • Bonus in addition to base salary.
  • Equity compensation to eligible employees, including equity grants upon hire and the option to participate in our Employee Stock Purchase Program.
