Founding Software Engineer - AI & Operations (Full-Stack)

United ConcreteWallingford, CT
Onsite

About The Position

We are seeking a Founding Software Engineer to revolutionize operations in the precast concrete industry. Our current systems rely on manual processes like spreadsheets, memory, and paper. This role offers the unique opportunity to take full ownership of the architecture, technology stack, and roadmap for building new systems. You will be directly involved in creating software that the people on-site use daily, receiving immediate and honest feedback. The focus of this role is on applying AI to solve real-world business problems, leading to direct and measurable P&L impact within months. You will collaborate across the entire business, including production scheduling, dispatch and truck routing, job cost accounting, predictive maintenance, procurement, and compliance.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional engineering experience.
  • At least one production system owned end-to-end (data model → API → UI).
  • Strong full-stack fundamentals: a modern backend language, solid SQL/relational design, and a modern frontend framework.
  • Experience shipping LLM API integrations into production (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.).
  • Experience with OCR / document extraction and turning scanned data into queryable data.
  • Understanding of when simpler solutions are more appropriate than complex AI models.
  • Daily use of AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Copilot).
  • Ability to understand manual processes of dispatchers or plant managers and translate them into adopted software.
  • Self-directed and comfortable being the first engineer.
  • Experience with structured, task-specific AI automation.

Nice To Haves

  • Manufacturing/logistics/construction software experience.
  • Experience with route optimization or constraint problems.
  • Experience with anomaly detection on time-series data.
  • Experience with AI-assisted procurement tools.

Responsibilities

  • Build systems that people on-site use every day, with direct and immediate feedback.
  • Develop AI-driven solutions for problems such as invoice auditing, demand forecasting, anomaly detection in utility data, and route optimization.
  • Own the architecture, technology stack, and roadmap for new software systems.
  • Work across the entire business, including production scheduling, dispatch and truck routing, job cost accounting, predictive maintenance, procurement, and compliance.
  • Implement an OCR + LLM pipeline to automatically catch errors in vendor invoices.
  • Build ML/time-series models for demand forecasting based on sales history and inventory.
  • Develop a unified system for inventory and job costing.
  • Create solutions for route and load planning, considering truck capacity and freight costs.
  • Evaluate and potentially integrate or replace existing maintenance software (MaintainX) for predictive maintenance.
  • Develop systems for compliance tracking (fleet registrations, insurance, inspections) and real-time notifications.
