About The Position

Choice Hotels is hiring a Software Engineer 2 in its Digital Experience domain to enhance and support Choicehotels.com and related services. The role focuses on building and operating digital products that provide hospitality experiences for guests. The engineer designs and maintains software to improve security, availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency, using cloud and open-source tools where appropriate. The position also contributes to secure cloud development, capacity planning, performance tuning, monitoring, and alerting. It is an individual contributor position on the Digital Experience API team, collaborating regularly with cross-functional departments and reporting to the Sr. Manager – Software Engineering, Digital Experience. The role is hybrid with four days onsite at the North Scottsdale office and includes rotating on-call duties, occasionally after hours or on weekends.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
• At least 2 years of progressive software development experience, including development of highly transactional, mission-critical websites integrated with large-scale enterprise systems.
• Knowledge of agile software development methodologies, Service Oriented Architecture, and object-oriented programming methodologies.
• Proficiency in software development best practices, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
• Solid development skills in Java, with 3 or more years of experience.
• Experience with Spring MVC, Spring Boot, and JMS.
• Knowledge of web service protocols such as SOAP or REST.
• Experience with cloud platforms, including AWS.
• Knowledge of network, routing, and web-related protocols such as TCP/IP, UDP, HTTP, and HTTPS.
• Experience with secure coding practices.
• Understanding of encryption and decryption methods, authentication, and common IP and application attacks.
• Good understanding of information security principles and best practices.
• Experience identifying and resolving security issues such as SQL injection, XSS, CSRF, and business logic flaws across large code bases.
• Exceptional analytical skills.
• Exceptional verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, influencing, prioritization, and decision-making skills.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with React, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, XML, or XSL.
• Familiarity with the OWASP Top Ten and CWE Top 25.
• Experience with RDBMS, SQL, or NoSQL.
• Experience with web analytics tools such as Omniture, App Dynamics, or Google Analytics.
• Familiarity with build and CI tools such as Maven, Gradle, Jenkins, and Sonar.
• Knowledge of Akamai CDN and Bot Manager.

Responsibilities

• Design, write, and maintain software to improve the security, availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of Choicehotels.com and related services.
• Use cloud and open-source tools when available and develop custom software when needed.
• Develop and deploy automated solutions to secure cloud development processes.
• Participate in service capacity planning and demand forecasting, anticipate performance bottlenecks, and provision capacity as necessary.
• Participate in software performance analysis and system tuning.
• Monitor and configure alerting for components across the infrastructure.
• Participate in rotating on-call duties, including occasional after-hours and weekend work.
• Deliver software on time and work to make estimates accurate.
• Take initiative to identify and solve important problems, coordinating with others on cross-cutting technical issues.
• Identify and proactively refactor technical debt.
• Keep current with industry trends and technological standards, languages, coding techniques, utilities, and operational considerations.
