About The Position

The Cloud App and Tools team in Microsoft CoreAI is seeking a Software Engineer 2 to help build the next generation of Azure libraries and developer tooling. The team aims to make Azure libraries and tools intuitive, high-quality, consistent, and useful for both developers and AI agents. Its work includes Azure SDKs and client libraries, SDK authoring and validation, the Azure Developer CLI (azd), and emerging agent experiences such as Azure MCP and Azure Skills. The team builds tools, infrastructure, and experiences that help Azure service teams expose their capabilities to developers and agents, and improves the end-to-end Azure developer experience. Much of the team's tooling and libraries are developed as open-source projects. The role involves collaborating across Azure SDK language ecosystems and with Azure service teams to create consistent experiences across languages, tools, and agentic development workflows. It offers the opportunity to contribute to AI-assisted developer tooling and to make Azure libraries and tools easier to discover, understand, and use.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 2 or more years of technical engineering experience coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • 3 or more years of software engineering experience using C#, Java, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, or similar languages.
  • Solid understanding of software design principles, API design, developer tooling, and cloud-native development.
  • Experience building or consuming cloud services, SDKs, developer tools, or command-line tooling, especially on Azure.
  • Familiarity with open-source development workflows such as GitHub, pull requests, issue management, and community engagement.
  • Interest or experience in AI-assisted development, AI agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP), developer agents, code generation, or automation.
  • Experience designing developer experiences across APIs, SDKs, command-line tools, or agent interfaces.
  • Communication and collaboration skills across disciplines, teams, and geographies.
  • A self-starter mindset and ability to prioritize and drive initiatives independently.

Responsibilities

  • Build and evolve tools and infrastructure for authoring, generating, validating, and maintaining high-quality Azure SDKs and client libraries.
  • Help shape how developers and AI agents discover, understand, and interact with Azure through experiences such as Azure MCP, Azure Skills, and Azure Developer CLI.
  • Design intuitive, consistent API and developer experiences across Azure SDK language ecosystems.
  • Apply AI and agentic technologies to improve SDK authoring, validation, developer workflows, and the overall experience of building on Azure.
  • Collaborate with Azure service teams to understand their needs and make it easier for them to deliver strong developer and agent experiences.
  • Use data, experimentation, and customer feedback to continuously improve Azure libraries, tools, and agent experiences.
  • Contribute to a culture of engineering excellence, inclusion, open-source collaboration, and innovation.
