About The Position

Clio is seeking a Software Development Manager to join their Engineering team, with availability for candidates across Canada (excluding Quebec). For those local to Burnaby, Calgary, or Toronto hubs, a minimum of two days per week in the office is expected on designated Anchor Days. This role emphasizes supporting and growing people, strong team execution within a triad leadership group (Designer, Product, Development Manager), and building robust technical solutions. Development Managers at Clio are expected to be highly technical and hands-on, actively participating in coding, design, and code reviews. They coach their teams to excel technically and as team members, fostering a safe and productive environment. A typical day involves collaborating with the triad to understand business challenges, identify opportunities, and create team roadmaps; working with the team on technical solution design; providing feedback on code reviews and architecture documents; contributing to projects through code reviews or shipping code; conducting 1:1s with direct reports to support career growth; participating in hiring to expand the engineering team; and reviewing code from team members or other developers seeking expertise.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated success in people leadership in software development, particularly with large scale SaaS products.
  • Strong background in hands-on software development.
  • Diverse base of knowledge to help the team solve complex technical problems.
  • Ability to describe successful projects worked on, as well as lessons learned from failed projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to hire, coach, develop, and retain engineering talent in a fast-paced job market.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the triad (Designer, Product, Development Manager) to understand business challenges, identify impactful opportunities, and craft team roadmaps.
  • Work with the team on designing technical solutions.
  • Provide feedback on code reviews, architecture documents, and other technical artifacts to support team members in making sound technical decisions.
  • Actively participate as a contributor to projects through extensive code reviews or shipping code.
  • Conduct 1:1 meetings with direct reports to support their career growth and development goals.
  • Actively participate in hiring to grow the engineering team.
  • Review code contributed by team members or other Clio developers.
