About The Position

Apple Service Engineering (ASE) builds the systems and infrastructure behind Apple services, including iCloud, Apple Music, Apple TV, Siri, and Maps. The ASE Compute team is seeking a software engineer to build and maintain tooling that enables internal cloud compute platforms to ship quickly and safely. The role owns the platform qualification and test automation service, which determines whether hardware and software releases are ready for production, as well as CI/CD and release engineering for software used across multiple internal compute platforms. The position involves developing the qualification service end to end, including its architecture, code, API, and data model, and establishing it as an authoritative release-readiness signal across the compute fleet. It also involves designing release pipelines, promotion gates, artifact and versioning strategies, and rollout processes. The engineer will work with platform, SRE, hardware, software, and OS teams to qualify new server generations and operating system and firmware releases across x86 and Apple silicon architectures. The role includes participation in an on-call rotation and collaboration with SRE to investigate and resolve production issues.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to design, debug, and test complex software systems.
  • At least 3 years of related software development experience, or comparable academic experience.
  • Experience designing and building CI/CD systems, build and release pipelines, or developer tooling used by other engineering teams.
  • Experience with test automation at scale, including designing test frameworks, managing test infrastructure, and producing trusted release signals.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent related experience.
  • Strong fundamentals in distributed systems and operating systems, and comfort or curiosity debugging at the OS and hardware boundary.
  • Familiarity with the software development lifecycle, from architecture through deployment and maintenance.
  • Customer-focused thinking, strong problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional partners across time zones.
  • Enthusiasm for upholding Apple’s standards in product quality, design, and user experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience qualifying or releasing software across multiple CPU architectures, including x86_64 and arm64/Apple silicon, cross-compilation, multi-architecture artifacts, and architecture-specific failure modes.
  • Experience with hardware bring-up or qualification programs, including DVT/EVT-style validation pipelines, software performance benchmarking, burn-in, and stress testing.
  • Experience with virtualized and containerized runtime environments and operational knowledge of Kubernetes.
  • Proficiency in Go and/or Python and comfort building services, command-line interfaces, and web UIs.
  • Experience with release safety practices such as canaries, progressive rollout, automated rollback, and release metrics.
  • Experience measuring, analyzing, and optimizing performance and efficiency for large-scale compute platforms.
  • Ability to communicate effectively within a team and with project stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Own and develop the platform qualification and test automation service, including its architecture, code, API, and data model.
  • Own CI/CD and release engineering for systems that support multiple compute platforms.
  • Design pipelines, promotion gates, artifact and versioning strategies, and rollout mechanics from commit to production across multiple sites.
  • Drive software qualification for hardware and software releases, including new server generations and OS and firmware releases on x86 and Apple silicon.
  • Define release qualification criteria, automate supporting evidence, and shorten the qualification cycle.
  • Write and review code and design documentation.
  • Address scalability, resilience, security, efficiency, and performance concerns in infrastructure services.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation and partner with SRE to triage, investigate, and resolve production issues.
  • Partner with hardware, software, OS, and platform teams to make qualification an automated part of every release.
