Software Development Engineer I

Clearwater Analytics•Boise, ID

About The Position

Clearwater Analytics is building its Generative AI engineering team. This role focuses on designing, implementing, and shipping production LLM-powered agent tools, MCP integrations, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems for institutional investors globally. AI-assisted development tools, including Claude Code, are a core part of the daily workflow. The work involves applied engineering on real systems rather than exploratory AI work. The engineer will build and maintain AI-powered systems, improve existing applications, and contribute across the software development lifecycle, including planning, design, testing, documentation, code review, and production issue analysis. The role calls for translating loosely defined requirements into production-ready software and ensuring applications are scalable, reliable, and secure. The position requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, at least two years of production software development experience, and at least one year of hands-on experience with LLM, agentic, or AI/ML systems in a production or near-production environment. The role is part of a collaborative, high-trust engineering culture and offers flexible work arrangements, with hybrid and remote options available.

Requirements

  • Fluency with AI-assisted development tools, specifically Claude Code, as a daily engineering practice.
  • Hands-on experience building LLM agent tools, agentic workflows, MCP integrations, or RAG systems in a production environment.
  • Production proficiency in Python 3.11, including FastAPI and LangChain, and TypeScript/React.
  • Solid fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of production software development experience.
  • At least 1 year of hands-on experience with LLM, agentic, or AI/ML systems in a production or near-production environment.
  • Strong teamwork and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage time independently and deliver results on time.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation skills.
  • Java-only backgrounds are not a fit.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain LLM agent pipelines, MCP integrations, and RAG systems using Python (FastAPI, LangChain) and TypeScript/React.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools, including Claude Code, for code generation, debugging, and iteration as a primary part of the engineering workflow.
  • Collaborate with team members to optimize and improve existing AI-powered software applications.
  • Participate in code reviews and give and receive clear, constructive feedback.
  • Perform root-cause analyses for software issues and identify effective solutions.
  • Translate loosely defined requirements into functioning, production-ready code.
  • Assist in creating user stories and estimating work for project planning.
  • Suggest design improvements using a solid understanding of system architecture.
  • Ensure software applications are scalable, reliable, and secure.
  • Document software usage, implementation, architecture, design, and APIs.
  • Write broad unit and integration tests consistently.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Flexible work arrangements, with hybrid and remote options available.
  • Access to cutting-edge AI tools and infrastructure as part of day-to-day work.
  • A collaborative, high-trust engineering culture that values craft, speed, and continuous learning.
