Software Development Engineer 3- AI & Agentic Systems

WEXWEXUS•Francisco, DC
•$121,500 - $145,500

About The Position

At WEX, a Software Development Engineer (SDE) Level 3 is a senior technical leader who designs complete services, solves complex integration problems, and drives major initiatives from end to end. The role contributes directly to AI-driven opportunities, building AI-powered software with tools such as Google Gemini, AWS Agent Core, Claude, and other third-party agentic integrations. It also supports internal AI adoption through education and coaching. The engineer designs and deploys multi-agent workflows, including state management, persistent memory, and complex tool interactions. They own services and cross-platform integrations throughout their lifecycle, make data-orchestration trade-offs, and build resilient, secure, testable, and maintainable systems. The role also covers cloud infrastructure, automated deployment, CI/CD optimization, root-cause analysis, and incident leadership. In partnership with Product Managers, the engineer defines non-functional requirements, negotiates backlog priorities and technical debt, proposes practical alternatives, and mentors junior engineers. They set quality standards through empathetic code review, facilitate engineering consensus, and continuously learn and share knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy multi-agent workflows in AWS Agent Core, including state management, memory persistence, and complex tool interactions.
  • Support internal AI adoption through education and coaching on tools such as Google Gemini Enterprise, and collaborate with external AI partners on agentic opportunities.
  • Design, build, and own the lifecycle of complete services and cross-platform integrations; solve complex system gaps and drive audit strategies.
  • Make data-orchestration decisions, such as choosing between MCP/API and agents/skills, based on data and requirements.
  • Build resilient systems using retries, circuit breakers, and fallbacks, with designs that remain testable and maintainable.
  • Review code for security issues and ensure services comply with WEX authentication standards, including OAuth scopes.
  • Design reliable, cost-aware cloud infrastructure, including auto-scaling and failover strategies, while avoiding resource over-provisioning.
  • Own automated deployment packages and metadata frameworks, and create scripts or automation manifests to deploy configurations across sandbox tiers and prevent environment drift.
  • Build and optimize CI/CD pipelines to reduce build times and improve feedback loops.
  • Resolve complex bugs, including intermittent issues, race conditions, and memory leaks, and permanently address root causes.
  • Lead incidents for owned services during outages and create triage runbooks and playbooks for Tier 1/2 helpdesk teams and junior analysts.
  • Partner with Product Managers by owning non-functional requirements such as performance, security, and scalability.
  • Work with Product Managers to prioritize backlogs, negotiate technical debt and refactoring, and balance must-haves against nice-to-haves to support achievable sprints.
  • Offer alternative solutions that respect time and budget constraints.
  • Conduct empathetic, rigorous code reviews; uphold clean design patterns; and mentor and delegate to SDE 1 and SDE 2 engineers to support their development.
  • Facilitate data-driven engineering discussions, resolve disagreements, and ensure quieter voices are heard in design meetings.
  • Learn and apply new languages and frameworks, lead knowledge-sharing sessions, seek feedback, and adapt across workstreams as project needs change.
