About The Position

WEX is seeking a Java developer for its Mobility Engineering team to build SaaS and PaaS solutions supporting the EV energy transition. Products include on-route and at-home charging, reimbursement solutions for EV users in the US and EU, and systems for credit issuance and fleet-manager spending controls. The role contributes throughout the software development lifecycle, from scalable architecture and implementation through deployment and ongoing support, using DevOps and agile practices. This is a remote position, but the candidate must reside within 30 miles of Boston, MA; the San Francisco Bay Area, CA; Dallas, TX; Salt Lake City, UT; Seattle, WA; or Portland, ME.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent education or work experience.
Hands-on application development experience with Java, Spring Boot, and REST APIs.
Experience with event-driven microservices architecture using Docker, Kubernetes, and Kafka.
Experience with low-level technical design and writing user stories using JIRA and Confluence.
Strong database skills, including SQL, Postgres, and Liquibase.
Demonstrable CI/CD experience.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to learn new technology and switch between technology stacks with minimal difficulty.
Comfort working with backend code, services, data stores, and infrastructure systems.
Architecture and design skills.
Experience writing modern software deployed in the cloud.
Comfort with encryption schemes, modern APIs, and frameworks.
Experience working on agile teams to deliver software iteratively.
Adaptability, versatility, and dependability in a dynamic software engineering team.
Ability to lead and mentor a scrum team and serve as scrum master when necessary.
Must reside within 30 miles of Boston, MA; the San Francisco Bay Area, CA; Dallas, TX; Salt Lake City, UT; Seattle, WA; or Portland, ME.

Nice To Haves

Hands-on experience with event-driven architecture and tools such as Kafka.
Experience with cloud deployment and containerization using Docker and Kubernetes.
Experience with CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions or Argo CD.
Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform.
Knowledge of encryption schemes, API security, and compliance requirements in regulated environments.
Ability to work effectively on legacy codebases while minimizing disruption and driving modernization.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with stakeholders to understand customer challenges and design scalable backend solutions.
Design, implement, and maintain REST APIs using Java and related frameworks.
Optimize and maintain legacy systems while modernizing functionality and ensuring stability.
Become a subject matter expert in the relevant functional area and best practices.
Analyze existing systems and processes to identify opportunities for improvement and scalability.
Support live applications by implementing monitoring, resolving incidents rapidly, and driving continuous improvement.
Review code, promote quality, and mentor team members.
Strengthen engineering processes using TDD, BDD, microservice architecture, and vertical slice architecture.
Develop CI/CD pipelines and contribute to deployment automation.
Adapt to new technologies and frameworks while working in the regulated payments domain.
Lead and mentor the scrum team and perform the scrum master role when necessary.
Advocate for, mentor, and execute engineering best practices.
Use a test-driven development approach and take responsibility for stages of the software development lifecycle as needed.
