About The Position

We are seeking experienced US-based software developers for a part-time consulting opportunity focused on an occupational research study. This study aims to improve the documentation of software developer responsibilities and daily work within a US occupational framework. Selected professionals will participate in a one-time online survey or interview to share insights based on their current or recent software development experience. The role involves providing accurate information about common responsibilities, workflows, technical decisions, and various stages of the software development lifecycle, from design and coding to testing, deployment, and maintenance. Participants will help clarify the distinct contributions of software developers compared to related roles like programmers or IT support.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of professional experience working specifically as a software developer.
  • Current work in software development or experience in the role within the past 12 months.
  • Direct knowledge of software design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Experience analyzing user needs and translating requirements into software solutions.
  • Responsibility for system or application design decisions.
  • Ability to describe technical tasks clearly and accurately.
  • Current residence in the United States.
  • Independent contractor role.
  • Fully remote within the United States.
  • One-time online survey or interview lasting up to approximately 30 minutes.

Nice To Haves

  • A degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, information technology, or a related discipline may be helpful.
  • Equivalent professional experience in software development may also be considered.
  • Technical training involving software architecture, application development, systems design, or programming may strengthen an application.
  • Experience across multiple stages of the software development lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a one-time online survey or interview about day-to-day software development work.
  • Provide accurate information about common responsibilities, workflows, and technical decisions.
  • Describe software design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance activities.
  • Help clarify how software developers contribute across the full development lifecycle.
  • Share insight into requirements analysis, system design, software architecture, and implementation.
  • Describe how developers assess technical feasibility within time and cost constraints.
  • Explain approaches to testing, validation, debugging, performance improvement, and software modification.
  • Provide perspective on integrating software with hardware, networks, or other technical systems where relevant.
  • Review descriptions of software developer responsibilities for accuracy and completeness.
  • Identify missing, outdated, or unclear occupational task descriptions.
  • Help distinguish software development from programming, web development, testing, systems analysis, and IT support.
  • Contribute practical context grounded in professional ownership of software design and development decisions.
  • Participate in an additional survey, task, or short interview when invited (optional).
  • Provide clarification or further detail on software development responsibilities (optional).
