About The Position

Software & Data Engineering Intern Reports to Software Engineering Manager Word on Fire Catholic Ministries is a nonprofit global media apostolate that supports the work of Bishop Robert Barron and reaches millions of people to draw them into—or back to—the Catholic faith. The Software & Data Engineer Intern is responsible for assisting Word on Fire’s Engineering Team with implementing software solutions in pursuit of the ministry’s mission. The Software & Data Engineer Intern works under the guidance and direction of the Software Engineer Manager and collaborates closely with key partners throughout the ministry; including but not limited to senior data engineers, the Director of Annual Giving, and Word on Fire Institute Product Specialist. The Software & Data Engineer intern writes individual unit and feature tests to test their code and participates in solicitation requirements sessions with other teams to understand their software needs and plan to implement them. Location: Irving, TX Employment Type: Full-time, Shift: 8am-4pm or 9am-5pm The internship will commence summer 2026 and is a structured 12 week program. We are flexible on the exact start date; estimating it will start in late May or early June. This is a paid internship onsite in Irving, TX. Relocation and housing will not be provided as part of the internship.

Requirements

  • Rising senior, currently enrolled undergraduate student studying computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Proficient in object oriented programming
  • Proficient in data structures and basic algorithms
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and willingness to learn new technologies and frameworks
  • Commitment to the mission of Word on Fire

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with software testing
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git
  • Familiarity with basic software engineering principles such as SOLID
  • Familiarity with web development
  • Familiarity with AI coding tools
  • Familiarity with the work of Bishop Robert Barron and Word on Fire

Responsibilities

  • Create administrative panels and internal tools that help other departments in the ministry work effectively and stay on the cutting edge of technology
  • Write unit and feature tests to ensure the software meets the design specifications and requirements
  • Build software solutions to automate manual processes that cost other teams time
  • Attend meetings with the marketing, development, design, and Institute departments to solicit requirements for new software solutions
  • Consolidate ministry data into a location and format for visualization
  • Build visualizations from ministry data to help bring insights to other teams
  • Use AI tools to rapidly develop and deploy code
