About The Position

Trupanion is seeking a Software Architect to design and evolve scalable, secure, and maintainable technology solutions for its Insurance Platform. This hands-on architecture role provides technical leadership and partners with engineering, product, infrastructure, DevOps, and business stakeholders to align technology decisions with business objectives and customer and operational outcomes. The architect defines technical direction, guides implementation, and addresses complex business and technology challenges. The role focuses on modern cloud-native architectures, platform transformation, operational excellence, and pragmatic delivery. It also promotes effective and secure use of AI to improve software delivery speed and quality, and favors buying, integrating, or extending proven solutions when that provides greater business value than building custom software. The position is open only to candidates in the Seattle, Washington area. It has a hybrid schedule, with at least three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) working from Trupanion’s casual, pet-friendly office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 8 or more years of software engineering experience.
  • 3 or more years of solution architecture, software architecture, or principal-level engineering experience.
  • Extensive experience designing and delivering distributed cloud applications using C# .NET, Azure, REST APIs, SQL Server, and event-driven architectures.
  • Strong understanding of microservices, integration patterns, and modern software architecture principles.
  • Experience designing highly available, secure, and scalable enterprise applications.
  • Proven ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Property & Casualty, Healthcare, Pet Insurance, Financial Services, or other highly regulated industries.
  • Experience with Azure Service Bus, Event Grid, Azure Functions, API Management, and modern integration platforms.
  • Experience with Domain-Driven Design (DDD).
  • Experience with CQRS and event sourcing patterns.
  • Experience with SOLID design principles.
  • Experience building and consuming SaaS platforms and third-party integrations.
  • Knowledge of insurance operations, including claims, billing, underwriting, policy administration, or customer service.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools and modern engineering productivity practices.

Responsibilities

  • Define scalable architecture solutions that support Trupanion’s Insurance Technology strategy and business goals.
  • Improve reliability, performance, maintainability, operations, and security across insurance platforms through influence and direct contribution.
  • Provide architectural guidance, reusable patterns, and technical leadership to accelerate delivery and help engineering teams make pragmatic decisions.
  • Promote effective and secure use of AI to improve time-to-market and software quality.
  • Reduce technical debt through platform modernization and architectural evolution.
  • Recommend buy-versus-build approaches based on business value, cost, risk, and long-term sustainability; integrate or extend proven solutions where appropriate.
  • Design architecture for policy administration, billing, claims processing, payments, customer servicing, underwriting, and partner integrations.
  • Define system interactions, integration patterns, data flows, service boundaries, and integration strategies using APIs, event-driven messaging, and modern integration patterns.
  • Create and maintain architecture artifacts, including solution designs, sequence diagrams, data models, and technical roadmaps.
  • Ensure solutions align with technology standards and architectural principles; define standards for resiliency, performance, maintainability, and operational excellence.
  • Design highly available, scalable, and secure distributed systems and promote domain-driven design, RESTful API-first development, event-driven architectures, test-gated CI/CD pipelines, observability, and automated testing.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure architecture decisions are implemented successfully.
  • Partner with data platform teams to support enterprise reporting, analytics, and operational data needs.
  • Evaluate technologies, frameworks, and vendor solutions; conduct proof-of-concept initiatives to validate architectural approaches.

  • Lead efforts to decompose existing systems as appropriate and improve platform flexibility in alignment with long-term business and technology goals.
  • Provide technical leadership throughout the software development lifecycle, from concept through production deployment.
  • Guide engineering teams through architecture decisions, tradeoffs, and implementation challenges; participate in architecture reviews and technical design discussions.
  • Advise engineering and product leadership on technical matters.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Engineering, Security, Data, Infrastructure & DevOps, and business stakeholders; communicate technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences and facilitate alignment on architecture decisions and priorities.
  • Influence development teams and executives, presenting technical information in a manner suited to each audience.
